Just came across this last night.

Peeling drag on a Yukon river. Must be a...lake trout?

Perhaps they are following another species of fish that is spawning?

Lakers are found in rivers of the far north, including Alaska. They tend to run smaller than the ones in lakes. Nice!

That is beautiful, very cool. TY Old Salt.
Interesting to hear that lakers will spawn in the river also.

I don’t know which stretch of the Yukon he was on, but it looks like it’s skinny water, probably just downstream from the headwaters lake. Lakers are Fall spawners and it’s possible they were on their spawning run. With all of the silt, I don’t think lakers could live year round in the River.

I remember from the video series that he is on the Hess River. He does ocassionally show his progress on a map. He pulled up to this fishing spot because it was where a clear tributary was entering the Hess.

He had been catching grayling at other spots in the Hess.

It is kind of amazing to see these videos of such a remote area.

His videos run a bit behind when the trip happened. I think this trip was in the summer time frame. Looks like he completed the trip on July 29.

Ok, I guess the title and your first post threw me off. I knew it didn’t look like any of the Yukon I knew about. Is the Hess a tributary? Or why did you call it the Yukon? Just wondering.

Jim Baird used Yukon in his video title on Youtube of his trip in the Yukon Territory. I guess it makes more sense when you watch all three parts of the video (which I had). He starts on a lake, proceeds down a creek, a very long portage and then he starts paddling the Hess River.

I was surprised by him catching a lake trout in a river and impressed with the footage.

I re-read the title of the thread. I think Lake Trout in Hess River (Yukon Territory) would be a more accurate title.

One of the most spectacular things I have ever witnessed was on the Dubwant River in Nanuvet . I was there Laker fishing a few years back . The guide took us to where Dubwant Lake emptied into the river. There were thousands of Lakers occupying the river. This was in Late July. The camp had a policy of only fishing the area once a week. It was incredible.
