My 15 yr old daughter and I are looking to go winter camping. Need your recommendations on what lake we should go to. I was thinking Wood Lake, Farm lake, Lake One or Moose Lake. We would like to either be in a lake near Ely or on the Echo Trail. We have experience in the BWCA in the summer but never the winter. We are looking to do 3 days. Thanks for your help.

I would recommend Fall Lake campground for a first time trip. Close to Ely.

Some helpful information here.

Also, you will probably get better traction (pun intended) by posting your question in the Winter camping forum.

That's a great idea fpr a first outing. How much of the campground is plowed? Access to campsites?

They do not plow the road or the parking lot. If you can get back there, the campsites are really close.

Wood sounds like a good idea to me. Close to Ely, one pretty straightforward, not too difficult portage.

Just drove out to Fall Lake Campground. They are plowing the lot.

I took my first winter camping trip last February and stayed on Fall Lake. The dogs and I stayed in a portable fish house just off the dog sled trail right on Fall Lake. Four mile portage presents nice opportunities for day trips.

We've done a trip to Parent off Snowbank.

You could also push up ahead to Disappointment as well.

Here's our trip report.

Sounds like we didn't have that much fun, but in hindsight, it really was super fun.

I went to Little Bass out of the Hegman entry for mine. I liked it...Easy to get to, not in too far, but still a lot of solitude (granted, you don't usually have to go 100 yards past the parking lot for that, but still...).
