Hi all,
I am planning a 7-night trip with my wife to the BWCA in mid-to-late August this year. We've each been on a couple trips so far, but haven't ventured in very far on any occasion.
I know that this isn't the most ideal time to be targeting walleye, but we'd like to go to a lake that doesn't see much fishing pressure that has great walleye and smallmouth fishing (and we wouldn't mind catching some northerns as well. :) We'd be grateful for any advice or suggestions that you can offer!
Thanks in advance!

nofish: "An unpressured lake with great walleye and smallmouth is probably the holy grail of lakes for most people. Getting someone to divulge such info so easily over a public forum seems unlikely.
"
Yea, I'll be watching for responses too. LOL

Honestly, I think your best bet is just to look at a map for any lakes as far as possible from entry points. Then do some research into those lakes to see if anyone has (foolishly!) divulged info re: the fishing. That's probably your best bet.
And if you can't find that much info, that isn't always a bad thing. :)

Mid to late August is great walleye fishing! Yeah, they’re shallow in June and a little easier to find, but in August they are on a feeding frenzy so you’re in for serious action if you find a school in August. August is when I’ve got my biggest Wallskis as well. I would second the recommendation for Crooked, but you can’t go wrong with The Kawishiwi River, way up past Alice and Fish dance lakes.its more remote and I’ve always had good luck up there. The hardest part may be trying to get your hands on some leeches. For me, they have always made the August walleye bite more ravenous, but they can be hard to come by that late in the summer. I was able to get some in mid-August the last two years in Ely.

Don't know if you've finalized plans, but I'd suggest you can have excellent walleye/smallmouth fishing mid-August if rather than seeking LAKES that don't get a lot of pressure, you focus on finding AREAS in even well-traveled and fished lakes that don't get much pressure. Namely, deep mid-lake reefs or deeper dropoffs related to points. If you can locate such areas 15-25 feet deep, and fish them vertically with jigs tipped with crawlers or leeches, you can have some great walleye and smallmouth fishing. I've posted twice on results of such trips with some specifics on technique and location, you can find those threads with a search. (A must is to have a decent depth finder). Good luck!
