Going the first time in BW for fishing. We have gone in Quetico a few times and thought we would try Alpine, Ogish and Jasper. Any suggestions or tips?

When are you planning on going? What species, or does it matter?

Generally speaking, the rapids located at or near the portages are always a good place to start. Alpine is a good numbers lake. 'Shock' is as knowledgeable as anyone I know about this area. Hopefully he chimes in.

Have gone through this area a couple times so would have some information for you but would need to know time of year you are going and what species you are most interested in targeting.

as TB & FF commented , knowing time of year and species and length of trip will help with advise.
all nice lakes with moving water through out them.
not sure if the fishing will stand up to your Quetico trips ? fishing can vary on these 3 lakes and timing can be everything.
i would (base) camp on Alpine or Ogish , not jasper. if you decide Alpine , a day trip into red rock-jasper-ogish-kingfisher gives you some options

I realized that I didn't put the date. We are going the first week of June and enjoy catching lakers, walleye, and pike. We thought of going to kekekabic for lakers but are open to suggestions. We go to fish mostly.

if your going to Kek , might want to think about knife lake then ,
both are a full day of travel FYI .

We have mostly set up base camp and then go out from there. Since I am 66+ I would rather do short day trips. Is this a high traffic area?

Just curious why you said not to base camp in Jasper. Pad planner shows a 4 star campsite in Jasper.

Try fishing Alpine at the base of Jasper falls, especially at dusk. You should have good luck with both walleyes and smb.

you did say your trip is about fishing , aannndddd your 66+ , i salute you Sir ;)
part of that for me is also fishing from camp , my motto is "keep your line wet good things will happen. now times of the year (water temps) will dictate success from shore , but i like to soak a dead sucker or whole crawler on a slip sinker type set up from shore while at camp and doing camp chores ,, i'm always fishing ,
yes there is a nice site on jasper #801 but up hill from the lake and right by the portage (traffic) and maybe be taken , then either you push forward to ogish or back to alpine . the other sites are ok , and plenty of firewood but because of the fire not a lot of standing trees (tarp tying)(bad weather) , but it is coming back strong ! and a lot of floating debris around the shore line which makes it difficult to fish from shore , and if the wind is strong fishing from shore can be your only option , unless you want to brave the waves.
i think for your trip alpine is a great base camp ,,,(you are 67) (just getting across Seagull (can) be a full day , get good wind forecast before you head up the trail))))))))))))go to red rock - jasper-kingfisher(under rater as there is no campsite) and ogish ,, JUST MY opinion ogish is overrated if it is rated at all , IMO . but Spice and Skindance lake look like a couple of fun lakes to check out for a day off of ogish , "small & calm"
moving water can always be a fish magnet as it does push food into the lower lake but i feel moving water is better ice out to late June ??? but on any new lake i would sure check it out , and 1 spot that gets over looked is the flowage from kingfisher to jasper , very few visit ;)
best of luck , feel free to email , i'll try and give you a little more insight on Jasper.

Fish moving water at the right times. Work the bay in front of the falls running from Jasper and into Alpine, and the moving water from Ogish to the tiny lake between Jasper and Ogish. We worked the shorelines to find bass and trolled rapalas and spoons for northerns. We went in September so it was a lot slower. I've heard incredible stories about the results in front of the falls, though.

Jasper and Alpine got fried during the Cavity Lake fire of 2011. It is recovering and the scenery is still beautiful. In my mind the best campsites we had on our trips in this area were on Ogish. We had an island site facing north and a campsite on the north side facing south. Both had great views.

By the way, (I am claiming my age as the excuse), we are taking a tow to Red Rock which will help with the back. Alpine 342 looks like a good spot. Thanks again for the advice.
