Ok all, I know it's not ideal, but it's what I have to work with. With permit day around the corner, I don't know where to go. Looking to do a quick solo trip over Memorial Day weekend. Primary focus is to do a first Solo trip and catch fish (walleye primarily).

I'm thinking of the following Entry points:
#33- Little Gabbro/Gabbro
#25- Moose (take shuttle to Ensign)
#47- Poplar to Horseshoe/Vista area
#60- Duncan (I know this is mostly lake trout area, but how walleye in the area?)

All will be new areas to me. My primary concern is being able to find a campsite. I only care to paddle in a few hours, so if weather is bad on my exit day, I don't have too far to go. Any input is appreciated. Open to other ideas as well.

Oldtown, here is a great option for you. Enter at East Bearskin Lake (on a permit for ep #66, quirk of the system). Paddle about 35-40 minutes to the portage on the south shore to Crocodile Lake. Take the 100 rod or a little more portage that starts out steep but then becomes moderate to crocodile. 4 campsites on the lake. 1st is marginal but would be fine for a solo. Second is a great site with good shorefishing opportunities and a nice open camp area, but not real open to the lake. Third is okay, again fine for a solo. Fourth is really nice but not much for shorefishing. Third and fourth are in the eastern end of the lake and it gets quite narrow down there.

It is a dead end lake so doesn't get much traffic. On that permit you must stay all nights on Crocodile which discourages some folks too - generally very quiet. Now the good news, excellent walleye fishing, almost easy, with jumbo perch and some pike as well. A very remote feel to it for being as close to the entry as it is. I have seen more wildlife there than most other places. Car to camp in a few hours depending on how you portage and which campsite you take.

There are tons of walleyes in the "eater" range, say 12-17 inches. But also some nicer ones as well, we have caught a few over 20 and there's probably bigger ones, we honestly haven't fished it that much. For an easy entry with a remote feel, good wildlife opportunities and great walleye fishing, this one is as good as any.

Trip report if you are interested:

Crocodile Lake

Let me know if there are any questions. BTW, I like Gabbro a lot too, great fishing and nice sites but busy. Vista is a great walleye lake, a sentimental favorite but only one nice site and hard to get. Crocodile is at least as good or a better option as these.

Hog Creek to Perent. It's basically a dead end lake with a ton of campsites. Easy to get to and only a few hours paddle down a small creek to/from the parking lot.

Agree that Hog Creek to Perent would be another good option. The paddle down Hog Creek is cool but after a couple hours of it it begins to get monotonous. But about that time it opens up into Perent which is a beautiful island studded lake. Very good walleye fishing but...it is a shallow lake and on a windy day it will be a bear. Hate to get that far and be windbound. Wouldn't let it discourage you but if you go there, take advantage of the calmer hours early morning and just before dusk.

But then again you may have several perfectly calm days...who knows.

Thanks for the input- I'd thought about Crocodile, but with it being a dead end with few campsites I was worried I'd get there and it would be full. I didn't know about the permit requiring all night staying on Crocodile. That could be a perfect option. I'll look into Hog to Perent as well. Thanks!
