I have an overnight motor permit. Can I bring a canoe along and make day trips into paddle-only lakes as long as I observe all other regs?

I honestly don't know but would think you'd need a paddling day pass.

This is an interesting question, one I’ve been thinking about myself. I have DM’s and am staying at an outfitter so in my case I’d just grab a day paddle to be safe. But is it necessary? I’m looking at DM permit from last year and it doesn’t say you can’t leave the EP lake, only that motors are only allowed on that EP lake. And your permit is good for 4 watercraft so the canoe is covered in that sense?

I think I know the technical answer, but am curious to hear what others think. If you have an OP permit and decide to set out on foot for a hike, you wouldn’t have to go paddle back to the EP and fill out a self-service day permit just because you’re not paddling.

You can take a canoe with. When you pick up your permit, tell them that you have two vehicles to travel in. I have been taking mine in for years. Day trips to different areas are lots of fun. You will have to camp at the same site as your boat though.

It's a ladder rack for a pickup. Can pop it in and out, but I don't trust it to tow on the road. Works OK. I brought it up the Trail last June and hit a bunch of those one-portage-in lakes. Pretty fun motoring around. Went to Crocodile, realized I forgot a life jacket, and was able to run back and get it lickety-split.

As long as you show the total of watercraft you are bringing (up to max of 4), you are covered for paddling with your motor permit.

Hey duboly -- are you using pvc there instead of just rope? It looks like a pulk sled system. Do you find that to be safer, or what's the advantage? Looks like you're towing a loaded canoe in that pic as well. Any troubles? All of the info I've found online says to tow empty. Thanks in advance for any info!

Greetings. I ran the rope through the pvc pipe as without the pvc the canoe would cruise faster than the boat when I slowed down so using the pvc stops the canoe from running into the boat when I stop. It works ok without it but I found it better with the pvc. I do go in comfort so I put the light stuff in the front of the canoe and a can of gas in the back end to keep the canoe bow up a bit. It works ok but need to take it easy in really rough waters.
