Is there anyone in the Twin Cities that I cn take this to, to have checked out and updated, if there is one. I obviously don't use it a lot, but wanted to see if it is still good. My time is right but the date is WAY off, like 2000 off.
thanks
thanks

I have 2 PN's right now. PN40 SE and PN60. Used them a bunch along with Topo NA 10 and optional custom maps. These all no longer supported since Garmins' merger/buying of Delorme I can help but located in SE WI. Still I'd suggest replacing with a used Garmin 62/64 st a very comparable unit. Ebay has some starting $80, do not exceed $150 for a used 2 gen old unit like a 62.

BH didn't mention if his GPS are also out of date, mine is but otherwise still works good
there is an update available that is supposed to fix the problem, but a disclaimer says that doing the update might render the unit inoperable, consequently I have not done it, since who cares what the date is while tripping? Maybe the update was done by an intern, LOL
PN-60 update for date
NOTE!!! do not do the firmware update on a PN-40, 30, 20
it is for a PN-60 only!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not for PN-40/30/20

Both of mine are fully functional and usable. Just no longer supported same as the Topo 10 mapping program. I thought the Topo 10 program very powerful and versatile and had subcriptions for USGS topo quads, NOAA harbor charts and aerial imaging. Now use Garmin GPS and Basecamp with similar tools and results, I actually used both in tandem for comparison before the buy out. Went so far as a clipboard to use 2 PN's and a Garmin 62 for geocaching to compare them.

butthead: "Both of mine are fully functional and usa"
but do they show the proper date, which is important for some functions like sunrise/sunset, fishing times, ...
although if it set at 8:30 last night, it's not like it is going to set at 6:30 tonight
it would be nice if the mods moved this to the GPS forum since I'm sure there are other DeLorme users who have this problem, and it does appear the update will work for a PN-60 although other units are out of luck

I have the same Delorme and it has the same goofy date issue. The unit works good otherwise. I didn't know others were having the same thing happening.
I've used mine so much that some of the buttons text is wore off. The date problem I will just live with as the unit is so reliable.
I will wait as long as possible before I replace this unit with a Garmin. So many stories of Garmin's being unreliable.

yeah, most of the text is worn off my PN-30, I eventually found a PN-60 for 65 or 85 bucks, can't remember which, since My PN-30 also has a problem with the SD card reader, luckily I had loaded local information like the SHT info into the units internal memory so it is still usable in MN,
some background on the issue
the one thing I am wondering if the update fixes the problem forever or if the same problem will return in 2039 (we should be so lucky as to have the unit last that long
and because support for the DeLorme's is non-existant except for users I thought I'd post this here, how to reset the unit if you ever need to:
Press Page, Mark (the push-pin), Enter, and Power at the same time.
Release all but Power which will power up with a hard reset
as opposed to a soft restart:
remove batteries, discharge, replace batteries and restart

BeaV: "I will wait as long as possible before I replace this unit with a Garmin. So many stories of Garmin's being unreliable."
Again I feel the online opinions are faulty Bob. I have had a few Garmins my first a GPS12 still works fine. Have worked with about a dozen Garmin handhelds owned 3, all worked fine.
I did like the Delorme units but mostly for the computer Topo programs that worked with them! I find my current 62st and BaseCamp program now to be as useful and functional and thoroughly reliable. Nice thing about users who do not learn the equipment, it pops up for sale at discount prices frequently. All the Garmins I own except the Nuvi were bought used.
