I am with a Scout troop from Kansas and we are planning a trip to BWCA the second week in July. We have been several times before, but this is much later in the year than we have gone in the past (usually early June). Right now the boys are interested in camping on the western portion of Birch Lake - which I am thankful for this because last time we treked from Splash to Ima in one day with a bunch of younger boys.

I was interested in any fishing tips (species, tackle, areas, depths) for this area in mid July. My assumption is walleye at deeper depths, but I have learned it is wise to listen to those who are more experienced and to not make assumptions.

Thanks.

Are you paddling all the way up Moose or getting a tow?

When I’m on my computer I’ll highlight our best spots from an evening in that area last June.

We learned a long time ago that the tow is worth it. The boys were looking at these sites, but nothing is firm yet:

We use Williams and Hall and if I am correct, they will tow us to Prairie Portage if we choose. Our strategy was going to find a camp that was relatively close on day one and to take day trips that did not involve trekking all of our gear. We've camped on Ensign, Jordan and Ima before and we were looking to head a little further north this time

Thanks in advance for any information.

Running up to Carp can be fun...The pool in front of the rapids by the portage to Melon lake can hold pike and SMB's. Just make sure you're on the US side there.
