I live about 15-20 miles south of the cities, and the last couple of days I have seen what looks like snowy owls. I was in the truck, and they were on light poles along the highway. One had quite a bit of darker feathers, but the one I saw today was almost pure white. I will concede the first one may have been something else, but not the one I just saw this morning. Do they get this far south ? It has been a fairly mild winter, so why would they come all the way down here ?
Respect Mother Nature, because She has no respect for you
They frequently get that far south. I lived in Green Bay for 10 years and saw them probably half of the winters I was there. Their movement may have more to do with prey populations than severity of the winter weather.
Several years ago we had a snowy owl spend most of the winter on the coastal islands in Georgia. A local naturalist was able to collect pellets from the rain gutters of a beach house that it perched on frequently. Sent them off to a zoologist who specializes in identifying species from bone fragments. The owl was feed on sandpipers on the beach!
