I have a problem. I sent away for a gamma lid, but I can't get it to fit on the 5-gallon bucket I have at home. It seems just a little too small. Am I doing something wrong? Or are all 5-gallon buckets not created equal?

In my experience, they go on quite hard. It might feel like the bucket is too small, but it is really your muscles that are tiny! (Just Kidding!!! Getting a gamma lid on takes real effort for me!!!)

I always use a new bucket. Fresh and unmarked rims make for a better seal (in my head anyway). Maybe spring for a new bucket? Good luck!!!

You may wish to have a rubber mallet for installation.

Concur with above.
I put a bead of silicone caulk on the bucket lip before snapping the lids on.

Not all buckets are the same the gamma lids will only fit the heavier gauge buckets (like the green ones at Menards or orange from HD) they will not fit food grade buckets or those from plus 3 taping compound.

Get a bucket from Home Depot, use a heave rubber mallet band smack it on the lid.

I second the recommendation of the Menards bucket. I find the green color much more pleasing in the wilderness than the orange Home Depot buckets. The Gamma lids do fit on the Menards buckets. The color choice is Just my opinion though.

They are designed to go on hard so that they will not come off easily. We use soy sauce buckets from our local Chinese restaurant. I assume they are food grade.

That is a great idea! Thanks for the tip!

It has been a few years but i seem to remember it taking the force of a rubber mallet to get the gamma lid to lock onto the bucket. I also purchased a new bucket for the Gamma lid mine just happens to be from Lowes but for no real reason other than that happened to be where we went that day.

Lots of good advice here. I did manage to wrestle my gamma lid onto a Home Depot bucket. But I agree: a green Menard's bucket might have looked better.
