Hello, is anyone familiar with this boat, or has anyone tried tripping with one?

This boat seems to have great potential as a solo tripper, it looks like it has the speed and rough water capabilty of a kayak, and the ease of portage and packing capacity of a small canoe. It also can handle small class 2 rapids, and can be packed up and taking anywhere.

I’m thinking of buying one. I would really appreciate any thoughts!

Thank you kindly

I don't have any experience with these boats but I'm definitely going to follow this thread.

I have been looking at the Pakboat Puffin Saco (Solo) as a possibility for an Arctic/Sub Arctic Scandinavian canoe adventure. I want a boat that I can take on the plane and these boats look like they would be perfect.

Seems to me that Dan Cooke used a similar Pakboat type canoe for an arctic canoe adventure that he did a few years back?

Here's a link to a thread about Pak Boats

I am also interested in hearing about what type of portage yokes people have used in these Pak/Ally type boats.

Thanks for the link ??

There isn’t much info on these out there. From the research I’ve done so far, they’ve improved the boat’s skin durability, the sagging issue has been improved (one vid I watched you could clearly see it sagging in the middle where the weight of the paddler was). The seat’s comfort and adjustability has been upgraded. The tracking has been improved as well with the addition of 2 skegs.

I found some reviews on the saranac version in German. I took the time to translate. And those reviews were largely positive. Some tandem ocean paddling and some tripping.

My main concerns with these are how they behave in the wind and waves with one paddler and a load, how fast and how do they track, and how durable are they?

Hello Luft, the ?? above was intended to be a thumbs up haha

I’ve decided I’ll order one of these and I’ll give you a review. It’ll be a few months before the ice is out. Hopefully I’ll have it by then.

Sending well wishes
