Is there an alternative to the Piragis waterproof nylon canoe pack liners that's not quite so expensive?

I use heavy duty demolition bags found at Ace Hardware. They are made of "scrim", the 6 mil white plastic reinforced with a string material; this is the stuff you see covering commercial construction projects. We close them with Dealy Bungee Bobs. Being white, you can see your gear all the way to the bottom, unlike the black tunnels of darkness in other bags. I think the price per bag is about $4. I use a fresh one for each trip to be sure there are no punctures; After the trip, they get used for lumber scraps, bent nails, glass, and for discarding my handyman mistakes.

I've bought the heavy duty plastic liners from them. They still have them $5-$8 depending on the size. I've had mine for years. I do put my sleeping bag and camp clothes in a water proof stuff sack just to be extra careful

We have used Duluth pack clear liners for years. I think the last I bought was $3.00. They come in a few sizes and usually last 3 to 4 trips.

We use 42 gallon 3 mil contractor bags for the big packs and 18 gallon 2.5mil trash compactor bags with our Kondos Trail Pack. Much less than a dollar per bag if you buy a box of either.

My pack for solos is a Gossamer Gear Mariposa backpacking pack. They don't claim it to be waterproof but it's close enough and I have never had a drop of infiltration.

That said, like others, I use a kitchen garbage bag for the sleeping bag and a few mission-critical items of clothing, just to be sure.

I have always used contractor liner bags - they seem to last the entire trip. That said, my sleep system and cloths are put in dry bags. Nothing worse than a wet sleeping bag or cloths on a trip.

I’ve used the contractor 3mill bags a few times, they work well for a trip, maybe 2. You can buy a big box with 50 for about $14.00 at Fleet Farm. Get the clear ones for your packs not the black ones. Easier to see what’s in them.

I prefer the clear plastic liners available at REI. But contractor trash bags have held up decently well. I just prefer being able to see stuff through the clear liner. And I never use a liner in my Sealline pack, of course.

Cliff Jacobson recommends a nylon Piragis liner with a plastic bag/liner inside of it to serve as an "abrasion protector." His system, in other words, uses multiple layers, the purpose of the innermost being to protect the real waterproof liner. That's why I wondered if there was a cheaper nylon alternative to the Piragis liner. At the same time the plastic bag advice is very useful.

Ostrom liner at Recreational Barrel Works is around $40. I'm not sure if it's cheaper than Piragis, but I can attest to it's high quality.

I made my own coated nylon bag for exactly that reason. The Duluth plastic liner bag ($5 or so, 6 mil I think) is between the pack and the nylon bag, so you don't have to worry about ripping the plastic up.

Bingo... what AirPrex said. Get 'em at Fleet Farm, Menards, local hardware store, etc. Many times, they get used again the following year. Buying a box nearly gets you a lifetime supply for about 75 cents each.

+2 for that. Also, when you are done with the trip you can put your entire pack inside the bag and tie it off to keep that stench...I mean "woodsy scent"...locked in for your car ride home :)

I've used garbage bags for 40+ years now. Double bag them. Never had a problem.

I don't know how much Piragis liners are but I have used Boundary Waters Journal liners for at least 10 years. They are charging $30 for them. They are probably made by Kondos. They will last forever. I use them to put all my items in and then use a clear plastic bag (usually from Piragis) to go around the Boundary Waters Journal liner.

Thanks for the tips. Also, I was at Home Depot this morning. It sells 7 mil polypropylene "Demo " bags that look perfect for this use.
