Im curious to know if coronavirus is changing any of your plans.

My family and I have had a spring break trip to Paris France booked since last June. We've been wrestling with the decision for a week but we've decided to go and enjoy ourselves.

Its incredibly hard to get accurate info to use for decision making purposes because one media source will be laying out the 6 reasons why we're all going to die and the next will be laying out the 6 reasons that this isn't really anything new and that we shouldn't afraid.

I must admit I'm a bit nervous, less of the virus itself but more of the potential hassles caused by the panic. When I come back my office has told me I need to work from home for 2 weeks after I get back and that I can't be in the office at all during that time, thats ok by me. We'll also stay away from older family members for a few weeks after we get back. For that reason grandmas and grandpas aren't all that happy that we're going and they won't get to see grandkids for about a month.

So what about the rest of you? Would you have made the same decision to go? Have you made any decisions for yourself about canceling or keeping vacation plans?

I’m not changing anything in my life. I have a trip planned to another country and I’m looking forward to it. The social media and news media are generating mass hysteria as usual. Just don’t go on a cruise ship for a while. One person gets sick and you are stuck on the thing.

03/09/2020 09:38AM
Cruise ships have always been a hard no for me regardless. Not my type of vacation and outbreaks of all sorts are far too common.

So far the only real prep we've made that is a bit unusual is that we've made sure to pack a few bottles of hand sanitizer and some disinfecting wipes so we can keep things around us as clean as possible. We also stocked up on some non-perishable foods just in case everyone gets even more panicky while we're gone. Really most of what we're doing is guarding against the panic more so than the virus itself.

Trip plan? No. My July trip is on. My menu might change if prepers buy up all the freeze dried food! Its back-ordered, we'll see.

To make sure, I just called Rutabaga and they confirmed that Canoecopia will be going on as scheduled. I thought that maybe they would cancel it due to the outbreak.

03/09/2020 10:10AM
No changes for us. We are scheduled for a cruise this spring and if need be, will take the extra days at sea. if we are kept out of the port. There are a lot of cruise ships out there and very few have had problems. The company is sending out info about what they are doing to prevent issues. Some will probably fail, but as retired couple, we have the time to spend if we have to.

We have packed extra medicine and sanitation. Our health is generally good and that leaves us at less risk and the age of 80 or so is severally years away. While not looking to die right away, should I do so, I have had a good run and the next step is a step up.

I just hope to be home by my July scheduled BW trip. The outfitter has said no refunds for missing my overnight in their bunkhouse even with the C-virus keeps us away at sea.
I hope that was said partly in jest.

A part of me was sort of thinking we might do a real big effort after all of my appointments at U of Michigan Hospital on Friday, and head off to Canoecopia. It would mean a very late night, a long drive, and then another long drive either Sunday evening or staying over until Monday. In rethinking, I decided that it was not a wise move. Getting overly tired, missing some of the people we wanted to see (we always drop in at the QJ pizza party on Friday evening), and spending a long weekend with a few thousand people in Wisconsin just didn't appeal that much, especially since so far we have no active cases of Cobid19 in Michigan at this time.

We are not typical. Besides being in our mid-70's, we both have health issues that put us more in danger from this disease. My husband is immune-suppressed (since his kidney transplant), and is a type1 diabetic. I have just recently had surgery for a debilitating heart condition.

We still are hopeful that there will be no issues with our June stay at Rockwood Lodge, since it is important to us not only for the experience, but because we love spending time in the canoe country with our granddaughter. She will be heading off to college in the fall and who knows if this might be the last time?

We love cruises. We had to cancel a wonderful anniversary cruise in December due to my need for heart surgery. We hope that this scare will pass quickly, and that there will be more beautiful cruises in our future. I guess time will tell on that one.

Yeah I would only worry about getting stuck or quarantined somewhere as well as the elderly people that I know. But it sounds like you have that mostly planned out so I would just have a good time.

Sounds like a perfect time to buy food dehydrater. It's a lot of fun, cheaper than freeze-dried. Tastes better, bigger portions, no back order. What more can I say!

Nope. Going to Canoecopia, have tickets for 3 Cubs games , I have never had any desire to go on a Cruise. I would go bats on one. With that being said. If things play out in a negative direction, then adjustments will need to be made

We've already looked at seating on our flights and the plane is about half full right now. Will make flying with 2 young kids nice with room to spread out. We're also anticipating shorter lines. Normally we'd have pre purchased tickets to the museums we really want to visit but this time around we'll just buy day of in case things end up being closed. Trying to remain as flexible as possible.

Wife and HS age daughter are headed to Ireland with the High School band at the end of March. Currently the tour is still a go. they are using the CDC, State Department and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control to make their decisions. All would currenlty OK travel to that location.

The CDC alert page for Ireland:
https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/list

The State Department Ireland page:
https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/Ireland.html

And the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control:
https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en

Same tour company also has a band going to Italy. For that tour they are already making other arrangements.

I think it depends on where you are headed at the time.

I have a colleague whose family's spring break Paris trip in 3 days is likely getting iced. Mulligan in August.

My family is planning on the Alps, GB & Iceland in June/July. Will see when we get closer.

But do not mess with my Ontario paddling trips!

The biggest "if" for me right now is the World Championship Robotics tournament in Detroit the end of April. One of the teams I coach won our state tournament so they get to go to Worlds. We are making plans to go, since the event is still scheduled. We just don't know what will happen between now and then. There are scheduled to be teams from about 38 different countries and about 35,000 people. Crossing my fingers it all moves forward as planned.

I didn't have any spring break trips planned other than Canoecopia where I will touch very little and wash my hands a lot :)

No change here. Trip in May to Brule. October trip to Siberia. Think it’s too cold there for any virus. Not sure if I’d still go to Europe though.

Was planning on making Canoecopia this year after my trip to Mayo. Having CLL it seem wise to avoid crowds. Beside my daughter would kill me if I went now.
Wishing all that go a good time!

My vacation plans nearly always take me farther away from crowds of people. I am still going hiking this summer. I am still going paddling this summer. I any change at all, I may add an additional trip.

03/09/2020 05:44PM
I haven't changed my travel plans but others have changed them for me. I've had a few performances scheduled that the companies have canceled do to the scare. Or maybe they listened to my songs and changed their mind!

See y'all in Madison!

LindenTree: "I was going to go to Goodland, MN to pick up my canoe but had to change my plans, I hear its a hot spot for Corona and Limes."

That may be one hot spot I want to visit!

Currently my plans are unchanged. Leaving for Utah on Monday to visit Bryce (BlueSkiesWI.) We'll be doing some Xc skiing, snowshoeing, hiking to some hot springs, and a lot of driving to get there. Just taking wipes/sanitizer for those public areas.

Then I'll be flying to Alexandria VA , via Reagan airport in DC, to visit my daughter and shop for wedding dresses in a few weeks. I don't relish the idea of being stuck in a metal tube with people who have unknown issues, or the possibility of air travel being suspended while I'm there, or a quarantine (really, can you imagine being trapped out east). And I don't want to bring anything back- my mom has serious health issues- . So I will watch and see what it is like in a few weeks, make my decision then, and if I go I will try to use caution, and then stay away from mom for a few weeks when I get back.

I have no concerns going in to the BW other than the normal what happens if I get sick up there thoughts, and using public stores etc along the way.

The only change for us is the cruise line cancelled our Japan cruise in April
Just got back today from ten days in Texas.
Taking the grandkids to Florida in two weeks for spring break.
Two weeks on Hilton head instead of Japan in April
Week in Paris, then a cruise to Ireland/ Scotland, then ten days driving around Ireland in September.
We are both in our late sixties in pretty good health, so I think we are relatively safe. I would also guess we will have a immunization available by the time we go to Ireland in September. I think the testing and research is being accelerated to get this done as quickly as possible.

I just sent my son and his dog off in his packed up SUV this morning to Seattle to live and start a new job. I wish I could have changed his plans for him, not only because of the virus but because I’m missing him terribly already. But that’s not how it works. I’ll be going to see him in a couple of months, virus or no virus.

I know how you feel. A few years ago my daughter took an internship in DC right after graduation. She now lives further south, in Alexandria, and probably won't move back to WI as she is now engaged. Last year my son packed his truck & took a seasonal summer job in Idaho, and now a winter job in Utah. He'll be back in Idaho in a few weeks. He loves it out there. They couldn't be much farther apart. Miss them both every day, but they are doing what they enjoy, so I can't say anything.

Going to the Eagles April 3rd at the X, worried it will get postponed or cancelled.

Its interesting that when I talk to people about my trip to France they all act like I shouldn't change my plans and think it makes sense that we're still going. It gives me the sense that people aren't as worried about coronavirus. And yet we're still seeing a run on any type of cleaning supply, medications, bottled water, etc.

Maybe people I'm talking to are really worried and their just lying to me to make me feel better about my decision. Or maybe its a relatively small group of doomsdayers out there buying up all the lysol and bottled water.

Either way we'll be on a plan in 36 hours headed for Paris.

I'm headed to St. Lucia on the 24th, and as of this moment, it's still on and I'm planning on going. Hoping for no border shutdowns or anything crazy.

I haven't changed a thing in my life, but feel that might not be so smart going forward. I was at a big work event last week and shook about 100 hands...I was at a Blackhawks game Sunday with a full crowd...I go to the gym every morning and work out and shower there...my wife teaches at a HS and I have 3 kids also in school every day. I feel I'm almost going out of my way to expose myself to crap and maybe should think about some changes...

FYI
heat kills virus, they thrive in cold, why do you think they call it "catching a cold"? although yeah, at some point they probably go dormant but I wouldn't bet on even Siberian cold to do it

bacteria are opposite, thrive in heat, go dormant in cold

you are welcome :)

I'm going to Vienna and Budapest in two weeks. My wife is freaking out, but I'm not worried about a thing. I'm going.

Going to Vegas April 13. Still going.

Entering into Cross Bay Lake May 17. Still going.

I'm with Savage Voyageur: this is about hype. The media loves a good crisis story, and Americans seem to eat it up. This virus story is also an excellent opportunity for competition in virtue-signaling: who can show that they are "safer" and "care more" by taking steps that likely have very little effect on the actual spread of the virus.

Oh well.

And I hope you have a wonderful time. I think, perhaps, the fact that you are a young family makes people less likely to tell you to stay home.

If you think about folks like us, mid-70's, with serious chronic health issues. . .that makes it a harder call. So far Michigan has no cases, and that seems to make me more inclined to stay home. But we still plan our road trip to northern Minnesota in June, and I think it would take a lot for us to cancel that.

I also think that calling it "hype" may be a bit dismissive, too. Perhaps "hype" for healthy younger people. For someone immune-suppressed (like my husband who had a kidney transplant), someone with heart issues, it is a different situation. It's heck getting old! ;-(

There is for sure no single right answer, each person has their own circumstances that they need to factor in. If we had underlying health issues or were 30 years older our decision would have likely been a lot different.

Haven't changed anything as of yet, but it's a possibility we might postpone our Florida spring break trip until right after school's out for the year. But it's in combination with a few other factors.

Good time to buy plane tickets.

It sure is. When we were considering changing our trip dates we looked at what the new tickets could potentially cost. A trip to Paris in the middle of typical tourist season was going for about $500, thats $100 cheaper than we booked for in last June and we are going during the slower time and we got a great deal compared to what most flights were going for at the time.

Reminds me of Y2K. I worked part time at an army surplus store and we sold so many MRE’s and generators in December that the owner gave me a $1500.00 Christmas bonus. Lowe’s and home depot even went to a no return policy on generators. I would guess that in a few months people are going to be returning a lot of cases of freeze dried foods and disinfectants.

I'm guessing you are right. Its crazy going to the store and seeing the empty shelves. What sort of complete breakdown of society are people expecting? Judging by all the empty shelves where bottled water used to be people must be expecting us to be without running water. If that happens and we have no utilities I wonder if they've also prepared for what else that means? I kind of doubt people have thought about that.

03/10/2020 12:22PM
Agree about the bottled water. The only way we won't have water here is if we lose power, and I have a hard time seeing how that is related to a quarantine situation.

However, we did buy some extra sanitizer and hand soap, and we will stockpile a bit of our medications if we can. A two-week quarantine (or more) would be dangerous for people who are relying on medications to keep other health issues stable. I am thinking about things like blood-pressure medication, heart medications, insulin, and of course my husband's anti-rejection meds.

I remember Y2K well. My husband worked for the power company, and the predictions were for computer-chaos. Fortunately didn't happen. It is the only New Year's Eve I haven't spent with Spartan1 since we met in 1965. He had to be at work all night.

No changes in our trekking plans this summer so far. If I were 70+ with respiratory issues I'd think twice about getting out into the crowd. Unlike the flu, I don't think they've nailed down a successful treatment for those people as of yet. Maybe in a year. Heck, we can't even get folks tested.

But then I only am in the yoga room and bring my own mat.

I also haven't stopped going to the grocery store or the gas station.

But you won't catch me in a bar, restaurant, church, sporting event, movie, or concert.

It seems like people in America either think this is a hoax (unless you are old or compromised) or it's going to kill everyone. I think this is very serious. Will it kill everyone? No. But it will kill way more than the flu by the time this is done. It seems to me that some people are taking it to seriously and others are not serious enough. As I said on the other thread. I teach kids from China online. Their families did lose people. Lots of people died.. people who were not old or sick. Some are still dyeing. Now do I think everyone should run out and buy toilet paper? You can't eat toilet paper. But I do think some plans should change out of caution.

The coronavirus is coming to you.
It’s coming at an exponential speed: gradually, and then suddenly.
It’s a matter of days. Maybe a week or two.
When it does, your healthcare system will be overwhelmed.
Your fellow citizens will be treated in the hallways.
Exhausted healthcare workers will break down. Some will die.
They will have to decide which patient gets the oxygen and which one dies.
The only way to prevent this is social distancing today. Not tomorrow. Today.
That means keeping as many people home as possible, starting now.

whatever it is worth, it is now officially a pandemic says the WHO

if the great scourges of centuries ago are any indication, one person can get it and die while the next will recover fine, although millions died, many survived it unaffected, and keep in mind they didn't even understand how disease spread back then, nor have anything but prayer to fight it

I'm with Zara. I still go grocery shopping, but try to avoid other places where people cluster. They're already practicing triage in Italy, letting some die to treat others. "

Could you post the source of that info?"

Do a search and you'll find many, but here's one.

Here's another.

I read one yesterday penned by an Italian doctor who wrote about how they decide who lives and who dies, which is by the book, as they don't have time to triage any other way. I'll try to find that one for you.

I couldn't find it, but there's this, where you get to hear some Italian docs in the thick of it.

arnesr: "The coronavirus is coming to you.

I agree. It's exponential.

No wonder. Only one of the pictures show the workers with any eye protection. Don't at least the heath care workers know better?

On the side, the radio reported the WHO said paper money could also be an agent of spread and to wash after handling. No one has yet taken my advice and thrown any into my empty waste container.

Not our BWCA plans, that may be the safest place to be. We are taking simple precautions at the moment while this plays out. Avoiding large public crowds and diligently cleaning, washing hands, and sanitizing.

This is serious and will continue for months. It certainly is not a political conspiracy.

If you are looking for some non-partisan straight talk you should check out this podcast with a U of M expert.

The problem with this virus is that a significant number of people, generally over the age of 60, REQUIRE medical attention. Like 10-20%. If they get medical attention, they are generally fine. I think in Italy the average of death is 80. But because we have a limited number of hospital beds, if the virus gets out of hand, many of those who would normally need treatment can’t get it. Then the death rate skyrockets.

The other problem with this virus is it is very contagious, and the number of cases grows geometrically without public health measures (travel bans, quarantines, etc), with cases doubling every 5 days. If you do the math, you can quickly get to the point where hospitals are overwhelmed. This is where italy is at now. Death rate can easily skyrocket if they continue to get more cases and overwhelm the limited number of hospital beds. At that point, EVERYTHING shuts down. I think Italy just shut down all stores except restaurants and pharmacies.

It’s not that the death rate in Italy is very high compared to, say, the normal flu. But rather that the virus spreads so fast that you have to shut things down before you overwhelm the hospitals.

In the USA, the virus has now spread first by international air travel, then by domestic air travel, and now potentially by mass transit, large gatherings, schools, etc. Pretty soon maybe just by stopping for fast food. Without all those things shut down in a timely manner, its possible we end up like Italy very soon. In that case even some BWCA trips become impossible.

But who knows?

The Washington Post is reporting that some in Italy are forced to live with their deceased relatives. Franzese's sister was 47 when she died:

"When his sister died after contracting the novel coronavirus, Luca Franzese thought that things couldn’t get much worse.

Then, for more than 36 hours, the Italian actor and mixed martial arts trainer was trapped at home with Teresa Franzese’s decaying body, unable to find a funeral home that would bury her.

“I have my sister in bed, dead, I don’t know what to do,” Franzese said in a Facebook video over the weekend, pleading for help. “I cannot give her the honor she deserves because the institutions have abandoned me. I contacted everyone, but nobody was able to give me an answer.”

Update: we had to postpone our trip to Europe. We made the decision not because of fear of catching the virus, but because Vienna, our first stop, closed all the places we wanted to visit. St. Stephen's Church and all the national galleries are closed. Additionally, all outside gatherings of more than 500 people, and inside gatherings of more than 100, have been prohibited. It just didn't make sense to go to a locked down country. So far we've received 100% refund from airline and lodging.

As for Vegas.... I just can't see Vegas voluntarily closing without some kind of once-in-a-thousand-years emergency order from somebody high in government. I realize I may eat my words.

To the extent that my workplace is being upended (university), my sons' universities are stopping face-to-face instruction, and I won't be at Canoecopia because I had planned to also visit my mid-80's parents while in Madison (they live there) - frankly, not sure I'll leave the area at all right now. To the extent that my world is not the same world it was 48 hours, or even 24 hours prior, yes - this virus has changed my plans.

Panic - no.
Preparedness - yes.

My plans are not changing; in some cases, they may be changed for me. Tonight, for example, my daughter planned on taking me to a Wild game. Now, not sure if said game will happen as supposedly the NHL has told all refs to book flights home and visiting teams are supposedly being told to head to the airport to await further instructions.

Who knows where this thing will be in a couple months when the water is open?

Absolutely I'm changing plans in my life. My older daughter has medical issues and I need to do what I can to protect her. I wish all the people who think it's no big deal would think about these other people. They are people you know, even if you aren't sure you know anyone (we don't go around advertising her issues normally).

I stocked up on groceries earlier this week, including food for our pets to last 2 months. I did not buy toilet paper or bottled water, though. Ha. (I always buy the giant pack of toilet paper and it lasts several months so we were already good there). I canceled plans to attend Canoecopia, including the member dinner at Angelo's and canceled plans to go to IKEA on Saturday. I am still going to work but I work in an office with just a few other people in our own building. We do have some gatherings scheduled for next week but I think my boss is canceling them. I could also start working from home as my job has that flexibility (and will work from home on the days outside people come here if the gatherings aren't canceled) . My husband does NOT have that ability, but as he's a lineman he's not hanging out with tons of people.

Thanks, Nola.

This is how I am feeling now. When I hear people say that they don't plan to change a thing, I find myself hoping that they will at least monitor their own health before they go out in public. I guess I sometimes DO advertise, but in our case my husband is in the very most vulnerable position of anyone right now: mid-70's, immune system wiped out by anti-rejection drugs, diabetic, and high risk because of some other issues as well.

One of my questions for the surgeon tomorrow at my post-op appointment is whether I am now less at risk or more, since my open-heart surgery. I feel like my heart is healthier now, but still cannot assess risk.

Please think about your community and stay home if you are questionable.

This has never happened before in any of our lifetimes. Absolutely it's changing my plans. I've got Twins season tickets-season is postponed. I was planning on going to Portland for the track and field olympic trials- the olympic games might be cancelled so those plans would be out.

I have co-workers who were exposed to people with COVID-19 and are now in quarantine. It's going to affect everyone's daily life at some point.

That said, my BWCA trips are still on for May and August.

Thanks to a forum on here awhile ago, I quickly placed an order for my summer stash of freeze dried veggies for my bwca meals on March 1. Just in the nick of time, and it just arrived. I called to check my order a few days ago, and they said they were swamped. Cousin on the East Coast said all schools are closing, grocery stores out of food by 9am every day. Sheesh. Pulling together my summer meals as a backup for now. Thankful for a strong local food scene here in rural NE Iowa. Think my daughter's school DC Trip will likely be cancelled.

My family trip to Switzerland & the UK in 12 weeks is likely off.

Have a family member (wife's side) who is a PhD immunologist. He's feeling better but came down with CV 9 days ago, likely vector was a conference on the east coast. He's still sequestered at their family cabin alone (Pac-NW) & running out of things to watch on netflix.

If the Canada border is open in 9.5 weeks and we're all healthy, still going paddling.

Good question. My worry isn’t so much being at our cabin or camping (as long as you don’t get pneumonia while in the woods). Either of those has to be lower risk than living in one of the hot spots and that’s where we are. What worries me is the air travel from California to MN and back. Even if the planes are clean you are stuck sitting next to a stranger for a few hours. Without flying, we would have to find the time to drive both ways which would be fun but would take some serious time. It is 32 hours of drive time each way.

Also wondering about lots of other plans people were making. I’ve already bailed on one conference and am expecting another to be cancelled.

Well, Zara, I generally share your pessimism, but coronavirus is a virus and flu and cold season happens because we cluster and share air. We'll be scattering soon because of the spring and summer and that might help.

However, deep into fall and into early winter, I expect the virus will reassert itself. At this point, we don't even know if having the virus once produces immunity and there are two strains, one more lethal than the other.

I expect the coronavirus to remake our country and world and although the Black Death was much more deadly, I've been reading about how it reshaped that time, from architecture, which went full Gothic gloomy, as did literature, and even the air became cleaner and cooler, as lead smelting was greatly reduced and trees grew where people had once farmed, decreasing the carbon dioxide in the air.

I see demographic shifts coming, as well as political.

Be wary of every food, gas, and bathroom stop. The virus might survive for two hours in the air and up to two days on some surfaces.

My wife’s company sent everyone home with their computers, monitors and anything else they need to work remotely yesterday. She is working from our basement for who knows how long. She was supposed to go to Germany next week for a trial, but that trip got called off. My kids are home for spring break and it looks like schools are going to start getting cancelled probably before spring break ends. As far as trips go, I’m still planning to be in the BW several times this open water season starting with a May Hike/Canoe hybrid trip. If schools end up getting canceled I may just end up taking my kids up north to the cabin for a while just to make social distancing easier. This is definitely uncharted territory, but better to be overly cautious. I’m not going to be one of those people carrying on like “no big deal”, end up infected, only to pass it on to an elderly person that ends up dead because of it. Everyone in my family has learned more about hand washing in the last week then we’ll ever need to know. I fear for my parents, as they are in the higher risk groups.

Using BWCA thinking in preparations for the short term (over 40 trips). When planning a week paddling/camping - we pack our gear, organize our food pack, then take a few emergency fix items to deal with most scenarios. We live in rural Western Wisconsin - so contact with large groups can be easily managed. However, our animals (horse, donkey, chickens) could care less about a virus and require daily support regardless of what is going on around them. Calm and well thought out decisions will be needed by everyone. I want our kids to be safe - but more importantly, I do not want to carry the virus to older friends and relatives. Have a trip planned for mid-June - haven't missed a summer in the BWCA in 35 years. Sure hope this one goes off as planned - but will assess the situation as we move closer to summer. I sense most users of this forum will do what it takes for the greater good!

I will admit even tho we have a Costco store in my town,I never been in a Costco. I know why now.

Costco store Today South Carolina:
People bumping carts into each other, people snarling at each other because somebody else got to the toilet paper, or the water, or the freaking paper towels before them," Carignan said in a video to his social media followers after finishing his shopping.

Though Carignan said he didn't see anyone physically assault anyone, he did see two women "passive-aggressively" argue over the last packs of toilet paper.

"I've never experienced adults acting like children in a maximum capacity like that," Carignan said.

This is the scene at many grocery stores across South Carolina and the rest of the country amid the coronavirus outbreak.

TO show how susceptible some people are to "panic" (studies have shown that in dire situations - 12.5% of people panic- 12.5% of people LEAD and 75 % need direction from the LEADERS ) -- this hoarding of TP ( and other items) which does little or nothing for the Wuhan Bat Sh!T is literally because of peer pressure and the absurd media.. People are literally buying toilet paper because other people are. That's the 1/8th that are freaking out. I respect the bat crap that came from China, but not changing stuff up and booked a BWCAW trip with my son in early June and his school district just (very wise imo) decided to keep kids in school understanding the repercussions (balance) of parents not being able to work and making things worse if kids are held out of school. The panic room of the 1/8th-- HA!!

Well, we were going to go to the Caribbean this month, but due to a variety of factors decided not to. The virus didn't really enter into it. I am still planning to be on Horse lake in mid June.
Speaking of the virus, what is up with the run on TP ? Do people realize that this is a respiratory illness ? I mean, TP is for the other end. And do you need what seems to amount to a roll a day ? I moseyed up to the emporium of food yesterday, and sure enough they were all out. Since we have a decent supply, I ended up with a couple of boxes of Kleenex, of which there was plenty, just in case. Didn't look for wipes or anything like that, so I can't say what was in the store, but did see plenty of paper towels.
Come on folks, get a grip. Yeah, it will probably get worse (given our governments response), but I don't think it will be the end of civilization. Stock up on canned goods and other food, maybe, but TP ?

Our church shut down for 2 weeks and subsequently they are our BSA sponsor so we are done for 2 weeks. There were 2 big Scout gatherings this weekend that were shut down. So yes starting to affect us. My guess is schools will be shut down soon in the Twin Cities, I know they are preparing.

The food shelf we buy for is having trouble buying items for those in need due to hoarding. It affects me but not directly hurting me personally.

The TP panic is disappointing to see...at least locally my sports radio show station had infectious disease experts on all day (since there are no sports) as did a lot of the local media outlets to try to educate people and dispel myths. That was very encouraging to see. I listened to 4 infectious disease experts yesterday in various outlets and they all had the same message that state, local and federal responses have been good...better than our response to H1N1. They did make fun of all the TP buyers:) I feel bad for those that are just plain out and need some and maybe can’t get it.

Every disease expert said you can’t get it from just being around infected people. You need to have someone sneeze or cough on you, hence the reason to stay 6 feet away...that is the max it can travel from a cough or sneeze. Or you get it from touching a surface someone coughed or sneezed on and then touching to your face or mouth. Practice good hygiene and your risk goes down. If infected—even if you don’t know you are— Practice good hygiene and your risk of spreading to others goes significantly down. Don’t cough or sneeze into your hand. Wash your hands...wash your hands! Early evidence is that we are most contagious before we really know we are feeling very sick or some don’t feel sick at all. So once again practice good hand hygiene for the sake of those that can’t tolerate this disease.

I'm torn on this. On one hand the coverage is oppressive right now. On the other hand, we clearly need to act or we could end up overwhelming our hospitals causing a snowball effect and harming other sick or injured people who need a bed or attention. So yes, the situation is serious. To think it's "no big deal" is just being naive to how this virus spreads. Double a penny every day for 30 days and see what happens. It grows exponentially. We don't act and this is what would happen.

This is 15 minutes (video) with a person with extensive experience with infectious disease.

As a demi-member of the media and someone who accesses a lot of media, I'm confused by your use of "the absurd media." Have you read or heard the media encouraging people to purchase superfluous toilet paper? I know it's reported by the media, but then the descriptor "absurd" applies to the hoarders. Applying it to the media for simply reporting it is like calling the media violent when they report violence.

At another website, a South Korean statistician and professor keeps harping on the ubiquitous inability of people to grasp exponential growth.

If anything, the savagery of this disease on the elderly is under-reported. Pay particular attention to the first two bar graphs in this article and fear for our elders.

I am struggling to get my parents to bunker in their houses. Triage is underway in Italy and the nurses and doctors sure aren't prioritizing the elderly, which means the elderly have to prioritize their health and stay inside.

We are not "hoarding" TP, but I also think it is something you do not want to be without if you are quarantined for 2 or more weeks. We did buy a couple packages, and our local Meijer store had quite a bit in most brands, including my favorite. This was two days ago.

I think I have said before that I am puzzled by the run on bottled water.

We probably wouldn't have stayed at home this much, as my husband seems to think everyone is overreacting. . .but now there is nowhere to go. All of our activities are canceled, at least until mid-April, and some beyond that.

Well, I gotta admit the trip to France didn't go as planned.

We were all packed and ready to, headed to the airport, boarded the plane, and flew to Iceland where we had a planned layover. While we were in the air Trump announced the travel ban from Europe. Due to how Trump worded things in his speech the initial policy that the airlines were operating under was that once in place no one was allowed to return to the US including US citizens. Because of that we were forced to buy new tickets and return to the US immediately. New tickets that got us as far as Washington DC set us back over $2000 and then another $1000 to get from DC to Minnesota. All because the ban was not correctly communicated.

Had the correct information been communicated we would have continued on to Paris and then worked on changing our return flights to get us home since all cafes and restaurants ended up closing the next day or 2. It would have saved us thousands of dollars. Instead we're out the $3000 in new tickets and another couple hundred in hotel and uber costs in DC plus we're currently looking at losing all the money we paid for our original return flights.

We're all of course disappointed in our trip falling apart but more so we're frustrated in how poorly the travel ban was implemented and the repercussions that the poor communication had on us and thousands of other travelers that were caught in the same situation as us. It was also shocking to see that after the ban was announced they were still letting thousands upon thousands of people into the country without any sort of screening so I'm not sure how effective the travel ban is going to be. At minimum is seems too little too late.

If you're so inclined you can do me a favor and donate that money somewhere that might be able to help those being laid off, losing hours, or having to stay home to care for children without getting paid. Of course we followed the news. Given my wifes line of work we were probably more informed on the risk of international travel than most people. We knew the risk associated with contracting the virus and the potential of some closures once we were there. We accepted those. What we didnt plan on was a complete shut down of all travel from Europe to the US. Of course a complete shutdown is not reality nor was it ever the true reality but Trump initially said it was so thats what the airlines operated under for a period of time and unfortunatley his incorrect info coupled with bad timing we got burned. Had we had more time to make a decision we would have been able to wait for the true info to come out. Unfortunately we had less than an hour before our flight left Iceland to make a decision and at that time the word was it was a complete ban. Again bad timing and incorrect info equals a bad deal for thousands of Americans.

Nope not a millennial and frankly I don't care what you think about my decision. We made a decision based on all the current info we had including potential risks based on what we had seen in other countries. We understood the risk of infection and had planned self isolation upon our return regardless. We talked about the potential of travel bans like had been implemented for China and Italy and we knew first hand how those had been handled and what implications they had for US travelers. We just didnt account for the possibility of the President incorrectly describing the ban in his speech. While it sucks to miss out on the vacation and lose the money that we did we knew there was risk involved and we accept that. Call me selfish if you'd like, doesnt bother me in the least.

Missmolly, I have had good interactions with Nofish in the past and I do feel bad that he lost his trip and a lot of extra money on top of the money lost from reservations. The way he wrote it whether intentional or not came across slightly political to me though and he admitted it was going to be a risk.

The result was not good which was part of the risk that he stated he was ok with taking. It's pretty much simple as that for me.

I do feel podgeo is being way too aggressive for no reason. But he might just be one of the people more scared by this. Fear makes normal people act differently than they otherwise would.

nofish is a good person, and I agree that he has been kind on here. He has a young family. We first met nofish when they stayed in a cabin next to ours at Rockwood. I am very sorry about his trip, and especially the unnecessary difficulties they had in returning. But as this thread has developed, it occurs to me that he is more than capable of speaking up for himself and answering criticism.

We are all coping the best way we know how. And this is going to go down in history as the "spring of many disappointments." Sigh."

Thanks. I didn't know how to do this.

And thanks for fixing it, Lynda!

Thanks too for giving nofish some love.

Thanks too to X2J for easing nofish's way.

As Linda noted, this is "the spring of many disappointments."

George, I agree that we should be "changing all our plans this thing is no joke." I look at current photos of Madrid and Rome and fill with sadness and relief, for people there are taking precautions, and then I look at current photos of American bars filled with people and am filled with sadness and concern.

That last part. It is going to be crazy I think in around 10 days. That is about how long it took for Wuhan to explode if I recall right. And they were under complete lockdown after day 3.. That is why I made that other thread. It just seems like we are going to be the worst of all the countries as far as cases go. Lack of care about the "flu".

This will be the last I post regarding my trip. I do appreciate the kind words from all of you and I have no ill will toward those critical of my decision. I can openly admit going on the trip ended up being a mistake. I've certainly made them before and will for sure make more in the future. With that said I am still comfortable with the decisions I made given the information we had at the time. I didn't necessarily mean to make this thread political, I was simply stating the facts of the situation, it just so happened that the travel ban that was announced by President Trump played a big part in our trip fiasco so including it seemed pertinent. I also think its fair to state my frustration and criticize the poor handling of a very important piece of policy. A simple misstatement had very real consequences for a lot of people. I also didn't intend my post to come across as complaining, I was really just adding it as a follow up since I started the thread and wanted to update on the trip that instigated the thread to start with. If you feel like adding your criticism of my decision please feel free, considering how it turned out I suppose criticism is fair. We live and learn and when I plan my next trip during an unprecedented global pandemic we will probably do things differently.

Now that we are home we are self isolating to ensure that our decision doesn't have any implications for others. Before I left I had already made plans to do so including arranging for 2 weeks of working from home and keeping kids home from school and daycare. Although now all of those things are the norm for everyone regardless.

So far we are enjoying a lot of family time and using the situation as a learning moment for both kids. While we may not be able to have contact with people we are still fully embracing the idea that nature never closes. Our afternoon plans include hiking down to a local park/nature area with some garbage bags to clean up some of the garbage that always seems to collect throughout the winter.

Hopefully everyone is finding their own ways to remain safe and combat boredom. This community may be able to do some real good to help everyone stay connected given the isolation that many of us are facing. Stay healthy.

Well said and written Nofish

03/17/2020 09:31AM
Right on Nofish. The trip would have been a tough call. Plan so long and you figure screw it I am going to try. I can't blame you there and I might have done the same. I didn't mean to imply you were making it political, I just meant it came across slightly that way to me which might have been the basis for some opinions of others. I completely agree you are free to state your frustration :)

I am kind of coming up on possible similar situation. Big trip starting August 27th... I am hoping this stuff is gone by then but its tough to tell and I really don't want to cancel.

I haven't really been following this thread all that closely but any time someone says something like "you must be a millennial" or something along those lines, that says a lot more about your judgmental/envious personality than it says about millennials.

I have a number of day trips planned in May and I have a mid June Solo trip planned as well. I don't think I'll have to change my plans at this point. My parent elderly parents live in Embarrass and I stay there before I leave on my trips. My only concern is that I would unknowingly infect them. Hopefully by then, thinks will have calmed down.

Say, George, I thanked lindy in another thread for reporting to work (He manages a grocery store.) and keeping America running and I want to thank you too. I'm old, so I've got it easy because I can hunker in my home. Anyone still going out there because there's work to do and we can't just turn off the lights of America deserves our gratitude.

It's cool that we're related!*

*This is how I know we're related. You wrote, "And yes somedays I am short with common sense." ME TOO! ;-)

I suspect that in late December many children will be born as a result of people self-quarantining and social distancing. Let's call them "Coronannials".

The number of December babies will likely be limited to first time parents only. Being stuck in the house for days or weeks on end with the kids will be an extremely effective form of birth control for all current parents.

Back to back years qualifying when never having a real great season before the last two. Kids are bummed but understand. I feel bad for teams which never even competed in a regional or district event at least we got to compete. But got to keep eye on bigger picture and it was very logical to cancel the season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSWOhuwWo38&t=2s"

Our FRC team 3630 (The Stampede) went t Worlds last year and I got to be a chaperone. The teams I actually coach are at the FLL level.

Yep,... one of the best “stuck in the house” activities pretty much eliminated. And In homes which already include in-laws, .... forget it!

We were headed to Sanibel Island at the end of the month but were able to change our hotel res to June.

Have any of you who expressed no intent to change your plans changed your position? I'm not talking about having an event or cruise cancelled. I'm talking about you cancelling a vacation or event upon second consideration. If you have changed your perspective, why?

At first we denied, then minimized and justified. I did all of it coming to terms with the idea with the bulk of us. If we self isolate we will reduce the impact so I am hunkered down at home planning tasks here and will get some extra local paddling. I thought about a local trip, but decided against it. I do not want to be anywhere but home if it hits me.

I don't think so. From what I have seen people are staying home more. The only time I seem to get close to anyone is at the grocery store. Now that I am pretty well stocked up, I don't think I have any need to go back for 2-3 weeks.

At first though, it seemed like it would take far longer to reach us in Minnesota. Was it 3 or 4 weeks ago that the only community spread cases were in Washington state? Then the first case or two in Minnesota, then just this last week that the first case was detected in my region. My attitude from 2 weeks ago of "carry on like normal" has been completely upended. I'm still going to work and still taking my kids to daycare, but I work in a factory where I was socially distanced before corona and my daycare is the kids grandparents. Without a complete shutdown I can't really isolate myself any further.

03/20/2020 03:28PM
Whatever you think about what should be done. To fight a forest fire one of the best methods to stop it is to starve it of fuel. Maybe by isolation the virus will not have the fuel to spread-at least as fast and that is its hope.

I work in a hospital so it may be that I won't be allowed to take my vacation time in May.

If I am allowed vacation and the BWCA is open I won't cancel my plans but maybe I won't push so far into the wilderness on my solo in case I was to get sick while in the BWCA.

I want to be able to get myself out fast if I start exhibiting symptoms.
