Hi all,

Staring out my window today and it seems the ice is off the lake. With that, I had planned on owning a solo canoe by now!

Been looking closely at UL layups of Wenonah Prisms and Northstar Northwind Solos seriously and various other models casually. Looking for a daily paddler on local lakes that will fit my needs for twice a year bwca trips with my golden retriever and a 40lb pack. Depending on the model, a few different trim options interest me, but it seems I shouldn't be picky. Open to new or used.

I thought living in central Minnesota that if I kept my eyes open that options would "jump" out at me. They haven't. Not driving down the street. Not on facebook. Not on craigslist. Not on here (that I have seen :))

Talked to a few dealers and it seems with the state shut down that they expect backlogs on special order canoes and in many cases haven't taken on new inventory yet. Which, all of that I get... I'm certainly know I'm being impatient!

So... anyone have a boat for sale that may fit my needs? Or, any feedback on where I might search out options?

Thanks in advance!

You could try calling Dan Waters in Ely with Canadian Waters to see if he has any used Northwind solos available from last year's fleet.

Silent Glide in Medford WI has a UL Prism at a pretty good price. Dan is a great guy to deal with

Beautiful solo! I paddled a NW on a demo last spring, loved it! I thought it was very similar to the Merlin II I used to have only it carried a little more volume towards the bow and seemed slightly more stable. I think it blends a perfect balance of efficiency, feel, stability and capacity. Congrats!

Congratulations. Beautiful canoe. You are going to love it.

I’ve rented the NW solo for a few trips with my 90 LB lab. It’s rock solid stable, tracks well, and easy to turn in twisty creeks.

I am tempted to go grab one. Was supposed to be getting a tandem but that deal fell through from the pandemic. I usually paddle a friends boat with him. Is there a big learning curve to the dedicated solo canoes? (I am a novice but am eager to get better)

Thanks!

Not too much of a learning curve with a NW Solo. Nice stability, Decide which paddling style you want to use to go straight i.e. J stroke, sit and switch . Turning can be done with sweeps, reverse sweeps, wedges, Also You can use a double blade paddle with a NW Solo. It's great all around solo

Congrats! I have the same canoe. Consider getting a set of the kneeling drops. I only kneel about 1/3 of my paddling time, but feel the higher seat makes my hips more comfortable.

Good luck and happy paddling.

I think seeing so many pictures of people using the canoe with dogs is what sold me. Taking my golden retriever out for her first paddle this afternoon!
