Yesterday I packed my gear to see how it felt and how it fits in my solo canoe since this will be my first trip (knock on wood...end of June). I didn't pack the full amount of food, but did pack the bear barrel in.

Looks like my 55L Earth-Pak plus a small daypack will be plenty of space for my gear. I have planned things out to travel quite light. I took it all out for a paddle and the canoe (Mad River Slipper) felt great.

Another fairly windy day, but it handled well. I discovered that I like to switch my body position a lot. I spent half the time kneeling. Half the time sitting. About half the time with a single blade and about half the time with kayak paddle. I think this is mostly because I am not conditioned yet and it feels good to change positions and muscles being used.

I discovered that the front thwart is perfect for me to use as a foot brace when I am seated.

Anybody else getting out and waking up those paddling muscles?

Sounds like things are coming along well. How long a trip do you plan?

Planning a one week trip. Hoping things are opened up by the end of June...fingers crossed.

Each milestone accomplished gets you closer. Your report triggers similar thoughts about when I got my Magic and a couple CCS packs. Once I had the packs adjusted I shifted to large water jugs to continue training with a load. Having fun is what life is all about, great for you.
And yes I get out about twice a week, weather permitting. Work is slow so I also get out hiking about every other day.

I might have bought that Slipper if it wasn't so far away.

I need to do the same. Bought a new solo a few weeks back and have put on plenty of miles solo and w/ my Golden Retriever travel partner but I have yet to throw the pack in to see how it all rides. Add that to the list for this weekend I suppose.

My portage yolk will also be arriving today. Am I crazy enough to walk around the neighborhood with a canoe on my head for the sake of conditioning?!?

I've done this. I figure it is good entertainment for the neighbors. My teenage son hasn't been brave enough to portage around the block, he is always shy about anyone "staring" at him. But he does laps around our large yard and he does "step up, step downs" using the deck while carrying the canoe. I took some video of him the other day.

Yes, that would have been quite the drive. Jim was kind enough to meet me halfway between the Twin Cities and Madison.

Lol, that’s awesome! I got lots of funny looks when I was training for the Ely Canoe Portage Marathon last year. I even ran into a lady and her husband who asked if I was training for the Ely Marathon. I portage canoes around my neighborhood pretty frequently (there are some waterways within portage distance) though, so the funny looks are becoming more and more of a rarity. Makes for great conversation with people you run into though. Tell your son to keep up the good work!

Not out there getting conditioned for my solo (in 16 days), but I did get a paddle in today with Twins87 and partner.

I needed to test the new foam seat that I ordered from NorthStar to see how it performs in my Hornbeck Lost Pond before I glue it in permanently.

I need to do a test of putting some different packs into the boat. I want to try my hiking pack in the bow to see if it fits the profile of the boat better than what I am currently using.
