I looking for suggestions on some games to bring along on a 2 week trip that can be played in a tent on a rainy day. I typically bring a cribbage board and travel Carcassone, but looking for some other options. There will be 3 people on this trip staying in a 3 person tent, so not a ton of room, but would appreciate any suggestions. Needless to say I don't want to be packing anything heavy or large that would cause me to double portage:)

Lol 3 in a 3 tent plus games!?!? I do the 3 in a 3 tent but not sure we could function with games.

However we play cribbage, farkle, and yahtzee.

Well, you already got the pack of cards along so...
poker, hearts, gin rummy, spades, solitaire, euchre.

For me, I really like dominoes, but I can't see bringing a heavy set along.

We play a game with dice. It's light and easy to pack 6 dice. I'm sure you can look up various dice games/rule on line.

It's been a while since we played, so the rules are a little fuzzy to me, but Ill give it a shot (and note, there are MANY variations to this game, this is just the way we play)

We call the game 10,000. It probably goes by other names. A quick look, I see it's explained on Wikipedia.

The goal is to get 10,000 points exactly (variation is to get at least 10,000 but you can go over, we like playing to exactly 10,000 it gives the others a chance to catch up.

On your turn, you roll all 6 dice. You score points off various dice combinations:

single 5's are worth 50
single 1's are worth 100

These combinations below, must be rolled on a single roll of the dice, not in combinations of rolls:

3 of a kind, is worth 100 x face value, accept 1's which is worth 1000

3 x 2's = 200 points
3 x 3's = 300 points
3 x 4's = 400 points
3 x 5's = 500 points
3 x 6's =600
3 x 1's = 1000 points.

When we roll 4 of a kind, we double what ever 3 of a kind scored, and double it again for 5 of a kind, and double it again for 6 of a kind. I don't think I've ever seen someone roll 6 of a kind. It's only about 7776 to 1, so it's not impossible.

so if you roll 4 of a kind, in a single roll, the way we play, (4) 3's would be worth 600. IF you rolled (5) 3's all at once it would be worth 1200, and 6 (3)'s all at once it would be worth 2400.

(6) 1's rolled in a single roll, would be worth 8000.

Because that can create really big scores, some variations only add one increment for 4 of a kind, 5 of a kind, 6 of a kind.

So (4) 3s = 600, but (5) 3's is only worth 900, not 1200. You're just adding 300 more for each additional of that number beyond 3 of a kind.

Lets move on.

(2) sets of 3 of a kind we play is worth 2000 points. (some play that you add each 3 of a kind together, and then double it. So (3) 2's and (3) 5's rolled all at once, instead of being worth 2000, would be worth 200 + 500, and doubled =1400.)

We don't play 3 pairs are worth anything (you get a few more zero rolls out of the gate that way, and it allows others to catch the point leaders a little bit more. It also allows people to bankrupt their score a little easier. It adds a little more tension when they are rolling all 6 on a big number. We'll get to that. Variations allow 1500 points for 3 pairs, like 22, 44, 66) that same roll the way we play, would be worth zero.

So on your turn you roll all 6 dice, and assess your score (we'll use our scoring, not the variations).

Player A rolls 1, 1, 4, 5, 6, 6. There are no 3 of a kind, 4 of a kind 5 of kind etc. So the player scores 100 points for each 1, and 50 points for the 5 = 250 points. The player then has a choice. They may bank the 250 points, and pass the dice to the next player, or they may set at least 1 scoring dice to the side and continue rolling. If you choose to do that, and don't roll any more points on the subsequent roll, you bankrupt that turn, and score 0, and pass the dice.

So in the example above, I can choose to bankroll 250, add it to my total score, and pass the dice to my left. OR, I can pull one 1 asside, and roll 5 dice (better chance of getting 3, 4, or 5 of a kind), or I can pull two 1's asside, and roll 4 dice, or I can pull all 250 points asside, and roll the remaining dice.

Lets say I decide to just pull ONE of the 1's asside and roll 5. If my next roll is:

2,2,3,4,4 I have not scored any points on the subsequent roll. My roll is bankrupt, I add nothing to my overall total, and pass the dice to my left.

If I roll
1, 1, 3, 4, 4 instead:

I have now rolled 200 more points (I don't add those two 1's to my previous 1 to make 3 of a kind, to get 3, 4, 5, or 6 of a kind, you have to do it in a single roll).

So I can add the 200 to my 100, and have 300, and choose to bank. Or I can pull 1 or both of those 1's asside and continue rolling. As long as you continue to roll points on subsequent rolls, you are still live, and can either bank or continue rolling.

So on my first roll, I pulled ONE 1 asside, and rolled 5 more. And in this case, I rolled two more 1's. I have a decision to make, bankroll the 300, or risk it, and keep rolling. Lets say when i started this roll I had 2500, and the leader had 4000. I'm well behind, and want to catch up, so maybe i don't bankroll the 300, and instead, just pull ONE more 1 asside, and will risk rolling the other 4 dice to see if I can score more points.

I have now rolled twice. After the first roll I set ONE 1 asside, and rolled 5 dice, I can now set either one more 1 asside (200 points on the side), and roll 4 dice, or I can set both 1's asside (300 points to the side) and roll 3 dice. I'm going to just pull ONE more 1 asside (I now have 200 set asside) and will roll 4 more dice.

Those 4 dice come up:

2, 3, 4, 6 oops, I did not score any more points, I went bankrupt on that turn, and add nothing to my 2500, and pass the dice to the player on my left.

Or lets say I roll

4,4,4,6 COOL, I got 3 of a kind with the 4's, that's worth 400 points. The 6 is worth nothing.

Now I face another choice. I can add that 400 to the 200 I previously set asside, bank 600 points, making my new total 3100, or I can pull those (3) 4's asside, have 600 on the side, and roll 1 more dice to see if I can roll a 5 or a 1. If you are rolling less than 3 dice, the only way you score points are with 1's or 5's, if you don't score additional points, you bank rupt that turn, and pass the dice.

So why would I want to risk 600 points, to potentially gain just 50 or 100 points?

Because any time you have scored with all 6 dice, you may set that score asside as temp score, pick up all 6 dice, and CONTINUE ROLLING.

In this case, I probably would not want to risk losing 600 points, with a 33% chance of rolling a 1 or 5, so I would probably bank the 600, and end my turn (total now 3100).

But lets say when you rolled 4 dice, instead of 4,4,4,6 it came 4,4,4,5

You had two 1's set asside, and now have scored 450 points with the remaining 4 dice, for a total of 650, AND you have scored with all of your dice, so you may bank the 650, or roll ALL 6 dice and see if you can add to your 650. Well the odds of you not rolling a 1 or 5 with 6 dice, or some sort of 3 of a kind, or a straight, is pretty slim, so you roll again.

2,2,2,2,2,4

oooh, the way we play, those (5) 2's are worth 800 points (200 for trip 2's, but the 4th one doubles the trips, and the 5th one doubles it again).... so I had 650 as a temp score for my turn, and now added 800 more. I now have 1450 for that turn, and am not willing to risk it to roll 1 more dice. So I'm going to add the 1450 to my 2500 and am not just off the lead at 3950, and will end my turn and pass to the left.

So just train your eyes to look for 1's 5's, and various combinations of 3 of a kind, 4 of kind, 5 of a kind, 6 of a kind, or a straight all at once of 1,2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (1500 points).

Now we play, that when you first want to bank a score, you have to have at least 1000 points. Once you are on the board, you can be conservative if you want to, and bank scores like 250, 150, 300 etc. Or you can pull dice asside, and risk it. But the first score you put on paper, has to be at least 1000. You can play it both ways and see which way you like it.

We play you have to get exactly 10,000.

Lets say someone has 9700 points, and on their turn, they roll 2,3,3, 4,4, 4 well that's worth 400, and puts them over. Their turn is over, they stay 9700,and pass the dice.

On their next turn they roll

1,1, 2, 2, 5, 6. That's worth 250. They could bank and be at 9950 (which is a bad place to be, because you will find yourself busting on your initial roll out far more often.

Or, you can set asside one 1,and be at 9800 rolling 5 dice.

Or set asside two 1's, and be at 9900 rolling 4 dice, hoping to roll two 5's or one 1.

Or set asside the 5, and be at 9750 rolling 5 dice.

or set asside 1, 1, 5 be at 9950 and roll 3 dice, and hope to roll a single 5.

You get the idea. There are lots of choices to make. Using this variation, where you have to get it exact, I like to be in the 9700 9750 type range. If you get any closer to 10,000 then that, you tend to bust alot.

Lets play:

We're both at zero.

You roll
1, 2, 2, 4, 5, 6

Pull 1 asside, and roll 5.

4,4,4, 5, 6

You have either 5 hundred rolling 2 dice, or 550 rolling 1 dice. We have to bank at least 1000 to get on the board, so you have to risk one or the other. You decide to pull aside all bu the 6,and have 550 on the side rolling 1 dice.

You roll a 5. You now have 600, and are rolling 6 more dice.

You roll 2,2,2,5,6,6

You now have 850,rolling 2 dice. You don't have 1000 yet, so you have to keep risking.

So you pull asside all but 2 dice (850 on the side), and roll those 2. You could, instead, just pull the 5 asside, so you would have 650, and roll 5 dice. I think your odds are a little better that way. If you were already on the board, I'd say bank the 850, and pass the dice, but in this case you have to get to 1000 before you can do that. So you go with option 2. You pull asside just the 5, have 650 on the side, and roll 5 dice.

You get 5,2,3,5,5. That is not 150. You rolled all 3 of those 5's on a single roll, so that particular roll is worth 500. You had 650 set asside, so now you have 1150, and can bankroll and get on paper. Nice job.

I roll

1,1,1,1,5,6,

Lets see, that's worth 2050. I'll bank.

You're turn.

You roll
2,2, 3,4,5,4 You got 50, you pull the 5 asside and roll 5 dice

2,2,4,4,6 you got nothing, you went bankrupt that turn. You add nothing to your 1150, and it's my turn.

I roll
1,6,5,3,2,4 No, that's not 150, that's 1500 for a straight, I'm going to keep rolling, i get to set asside 1500 and roll all 6 dice:

2,2,3,2,4,6 that's 200 more, for 1700. I'm going to bank, I now have 3750.

Your turn, and so forth.

Questions?

I may not have done a great job explaining. You can look up rules on line for 10,000 and use their rules. Everyone has slight variations.

I know this sounds corny as heck, but if someone in your group is blessed with a good story telling/reading voice, a good book could be fun, especially if there’s a kid.

Ship, captain, and crew

We play Ship, Captain, and Crew, see link. We just call it, 6-5,4, but the website had it's official name.

We like to play this as a gambling game, but I suppose you could turn it into a drinking game, and could certainly use it to determine who does dishes, or cleans the fish.

If we're gambling, we put in a buck each (you could use quarters or pennies, if you're playing with your kids). If no one qualifies, or if the two top scores tie, everyone throws in another buck and you play again.

It's a fun way to play for dish duty.

It's also easy to bring dice, and a small note pad, and play yahtzee.

We take Farkle Yahtzee cribbage and a card game called Five Crowns. A cribbage board is a small fold-up board that doesn't take up much room Yahtzee and Farkle hardly take up any room at all.

Racko. We only took the racks and the cards (with rubber band around them). Didn't take up much room, not a lot of weight, and we enjoyed it.

If we were going now we would take Five Crowns and/or Quiddler.

Cribbage, other traditional card games, Farkle, Yahtzee, Captain-Mate-Ship are our common choices for 3+ players. You can do a lot with a deck of cards and 5-6 dice! I keep a copy of Hoyle’s rules for card games and a PDF summary of dice game rules on my Kindle or IPhone. Some other 3+ card games we have enjoyed included Exploding Kittens and The Mind:

Carcassone and Settlers of Catan have always gone together in my mind. There's a travel version of Catan but I've not played that: portable Catan Awesome -- when looking for that link I ran across a post from an ultralight backpacker that made the game out of felt: felt Catan

We've also brought Chupacabra to the BW to play with our kids (starting around 3 years old). Not sure it would be worth it to bring for just adults, but for kids it's a good way to sneak in some sorting, counting, and probability lessons while pretending to be scary creatures roaming the night eating helpless animals... Very appropriate for camping ;D

There is a school game that requires no equipment. I know it as BUZZ.

The rules revolve around the number "7".

It's a counting game, but you say "Buzz" anytime any one of the following apply:

There is a number 7. E.g. all the 70's would be "BUZZ".

The number is a multiple of 7. e.g. 7, 14, 21, 28, etc. would be BUZZ.

The digits in the number add up to 7. E.g. 16, 25, 34, 43, 52, etc. would be BUZZ.

Forgetting the Cribbage Board and cards led us to use this.

We have tried changing the number (e.g. 6 or 8), but nothing seems to have the same randomness as the 7's

Hive Pocket

Only a 2 person game, but it can be played just about anywhere, is incredibly durable, can’t get ruined by getting wet, can’t blow around in the wind, and can be fit into any small space left in the pack. It’s in the same vein as chess without the board and, appropriately for our favorite wilderness, is themed around bugs. There is even a mosquito piece! :)

Both made by some of my friends at XYZ gamelabs. Probably better because I have the kids along but good for adults too.

This game is great--thanks for the recommendation! After almost four months in shipping limbo it finally arrived and the whole family loves it. Me especially because (so far) I can actually beat my game-master husband at it!

20 Questions, I Spy (with my little eye) and the Vell Game.

Vell is easy. One person says Vell, the other says Vell, then back to the first and keep going. After a few Vells one person says "You vin!" Then you start over. Vell, Vell, Vell , Vell, Vell, Vell, you vin! Ha ha ha! Vell, Vell, you vin! Ha ha! Hilarity ensues.
