We have always used leeches before on our trips to the BWCA, but I wondered how long I could possibly keep some crawlers alive to use this time? We are going in for 6 nights the last week of June and wondered if I bought 4 dozen or so crawlers how long they might last. I have never tried keeping crawlers alive outside of a refrigerator before.

Second question would be is there any bait and tackle stores in Grand Marais that sells crawlers I can stop and pick some up at the day I go into the BWCA?

You can certainly keep them alive long enough, we've done it.

Depending on time of year,on cooler days while in camp just keep them in the shade, maybe buried under some pine needles, and they'll be fine.

On warmer days, we've wrapped the container in a wet towel, and again put in the shade, but don't cover it. Let the evaporative cooling from the towel cool the container. Just have to remember to keep the towel wet.

Not sure about the availability, but I'm betting there has to be a place in Grand Marais that stocks them.

Agree with the above. If you can find a small styrofoam container that helps. It shouldn't be too difficult to keep them alive.

In Grand Marais, Buck's Hardware should be able to take care of you but of course I'd call ahead. There is also Ugly Baby right near Trail Center, and some of the outfitters on the trail sell bait as well.

We bring crawlers at that time. You need to treat them carful. Keep the main bunch in a soft side cooler and set in the shade. Keep your daily worms in a small Styrofoam container.

Like Bucks Hardware, love the Beaver House.

No problem. I use the heavier duty styrofoam containers that are about the size of a 6-pack. Fill with 5 dozen crawlers and top off with worm bedding. Pick up a cheap soft sided 6- pack cooler and keep the styrofoam cooler in that. Keep it out of the sun.
