My group had a Quetico trip planned. Plans have changed to a BWCA trip "because things are open". I just am not comfortable with going at this time, so called and let the group know that I am OUT. What a bummer, but you just have to go with how you feel.

I have some of the group gear, so have made a list of items and will make plans to get them what they need. My group is very understanding, which made my announcement easy. Feeling bad, but not too bad. There will be other future trips to look forward to.

Yeah. Since I usually solo or tandem with one of my sons, seems safe, but with people from all over - I'd probably decline as well.

Thanks billconner! That's exactly what I needed to hear.

Good call. Paddle a local, unused river or lake instead.

I'm glad you said no if you are not comfortable. I don't know if I could have made such a decision, or stick with it! And to have an understanding group... that's why they are your paddle partners!

I really appreciate hearing from paddlers who are making good, safe and responsible choices. You, your family and the others in your group sound like "common sense" kind of folks. My family and regular paddle partners are staying closer to home this summer.

As we get closer to our church men's group trip, I feel that there will be identically hard discussions. And our trip is in late July...

I’m glad you made the decision that feels right to you and your friends supported that. I would have done the same thing. As we inch back toward normal each of us is going to be making choices like that based on our personal circumstances and comfort. Just because the rules allow something doesn’t mean we have to do it. I hope you have a great trip with your friends some time further in the future.

My favorite trip every year is with three younger guys I used to work with. I retired but have remained very close with them. Our annual trip is what has cemented those relationships the past 20 years or so. We have our trip planned for mid September.
I already anticipate a tough decision since I doubt the situation with the virus will be much different by then. I turn 69 in a couple of weeks and they are only in their mid forties and fifties. I have a few health issues also so am clearly the most vulnerable.
It would be painful not to trip with them. I am willing to accept reasonable risk but in August will have to figure out if it is reasonable. Right now it does not look all that promising.
I guess I can do 3-4 solos instead of my one solo and 2-3 group trips. At least I can still go.

Not sure where your group was coming from, but with everyone in varying states of contamination, it seems wise to beg off.

My dad lives on a rural lake with few year round residents... but the owners who come to their cabins from out of state are the main risk for my 81yo father. I keep telling him not to offer boat rides to those who come in from infected areas!

Hopefully you can plan something else to meet your need for adventure. It stinks but better than getting seriously ill!
