Long time follower, first time poster. I have an opportunity to buy a 1998 MN II in Tuf Weave and in very good condition for $900.00. Do you all feel that is a fair number to pay? I have a Spirit II in Tuf Weave and like the layup for it's durability. I really would like to find another Spirit II in Tuff Weave, but no success.

If you could post up a picture or two of the hull, it might be easier to judge the condition/value of the boat. I sold a Old Town Penobscot 16' in royalex a couple of years ago for about 800 which seemed to be the going price. It was in great condition with some scratches on the hull from moderate use.

If you peruse the FB and CL lists, you'll also get a fair idea of boat values. For example, a kevlar in that model would run you at least a couple hundred bucks more depending on the condition.

As a side note the modest (if any) increase in durability between Tuff-weave and kevlar is certainly not worth the extra mass. I have two kevlar hulls and a Tuff-weave hull they are all equal when confronted with the hardness of the rock of the Canadian shield.

First off. Thank you for the reply.
I would like to send pictures, but the posting on face book has been removed. I will be meeting with them in the morning. See how it goes.

if I add the MN II to the fleet. My boys can use the Spirit II and the MN II for are up comming trip in August. And between now and then I can search for a Q17 or Northstar northwind17 or Spirit II kevlar layup used in good condition.

Again thanks for all your input.
This is a very good site and everyone should be proud to be part of it.

The answer depends in part on where you are located. If in Minnesota/Western Wisconsin, you can find a MN II of similar vintage in Kevlar for (as noted above) a few hundred bucks more. It won't be shiny, but it will work. Having carried an older 54-pound MN II in Kevlar over a dozen portages on a trip a few years back, including the Portage from Hell into Mack Lake, and on the same trip carried my brother's Spirit II in Kevlar, the difference was amazing. the extra 10 pounds weren't as bad as the extra foot and a half, but the combination of the two made the MN II handle like a piano on my back compared to the Spirit II, especially on the half-mile to mile long portages. I think it would only be worse in Tuff Weave since it is going to be heavier.

While the MN II is faster than the Spirit II, it is not as wide in the middle and was harder to load and unload than the Spirit II. Unless you are really set on the MN II, I would suggest broadening your search for either a MN II or a Spirit II in Kevlar in the $1,000 to $1,200 range that has some wear on it. Look hard enough and you will find one on Craigslist.

You asked about the price. I say go for it with the following in mind. Are you in shape. will it not leak? Can you handle how it looks? Does it seem to be able to function for a long haul on car or in water? the price alone is not a problem.

I did go look at the canoe. I was impressed with condition of a 1998 canoe, but I had to keep emotions in check. He was asking $1500. My opinion way off base for that canoe. I said $800 he said $1200, I said $900 and no more. Well I came home and will continue looking. I have patience.

You did well! That's more than that boat is worth (to me)

if somebody offered $900 for my Jensen 18 (MNII is based on it) in tuffweave, I'd take it and immediately start looking for one in kevlar, but then I'm 30+ years older than when I bought it so as Banksiana said, the extra durability isn't worth the extra mass and the lower price isn't worth the extra mass either unless you don't have the money (which is why I originally bought it in that layup, and the added weight wasn't felt then being 30 years younger, lol)

I love how the Jensen 18 paddles. Wonderful boat.

Yes. The MN II would have been for my boys. It only weighs 1lb more than my Spirit II in tuff weave. Not a problem for them to handle. I did find a Northwind. Driving up to Mpls. Thursday to pick it up. That will be my toy. No one borrows that.
