My then 10 year old daughter on the long portage from Lower Pauness to Shell Lake. She had a blast on that trip!

Solo trip on beartrap river, furthest north portage at Peterson bay. The landing is super steep, slick rock, nothing to tie canoe to. My wood/ canvas canoe added to the problems. I’m quite certain that this landing is why the forest abandoned maintenance on this route

Yikes! With an aluminum canoe no less...
Hate to see what your worst portage was :-)

I think this is the portage into Shell? Anyway, first time I've ever paddled in the middle of a portage.

I'd agree. It took me an extra half hour to find that take out. I just would not let myself believe that the portage started up that steep granite. It did.

I tried to walk through that one last June. About the time I was shoulder deep, with both the front and back of the upside down canoe in the water, I decided maybe I should retrace my steps and paddle across.

I’ve always loved how well dogs do on portages.

We did that Shell one last fall. Never thought twice about putting the canoe in the water. Seemed obvious to me. But then, we've done the Frost River route. No idea if we used the actual portages on that route or just made our own but there were a lot of 2 rod, 3 rod, 5 rod portages.

Tuscarora-

Interesting to see some of those portages that I did this year. That beaver dam on the Davis-Kiskadinna is much bigger now and the pond formed was waist deep wading.

The Flying-Gotter portage has a much bigger landing below the stairs. We had some landing, but not nearly that much.
