So, I'm trying to pack for a May 18 put-in. Yes, I know I'm likely being extremely naive in my hopes that the USFS will not close the wilderness despite what the governor declares. But it is what it is.

In my packing, I decided to finally organize my maps a bit. To date, they had existed as an undulating, undisciplined, and mobile mass of paper in various states... folded, rolled, crumpled up, in map cases, etc.

I sorted the maps by maker. I have a lot of duplicates! Before I rolled them up, I counted:

7 USGS maps

23 McKenzie

12 Fisher

1 original Fisher map book, copyright a long time ago, with a lot of missing
pages that either fell out or I took out. I've had it since I was 15.

4 Voyageur

47 in total. I know others have many more. I confirmed my wife's statements she makes every year about this time: "You have too many maps!" But seriously, can one have too many BWCA maps? No.... Below is a visual.

Yep, I have a similar number. My Fisher map book is in a little better shape then yours, but I think it’s not as old as yours. I have 4 Voyageur maps too, they’re my favorite. Wish I had the whole set.

You can never have too many maps, never...even of places you have never been

Pretty much the entire bwca and quetico in this mess. Also Canadian quads all wabakimi, atikaki, English river some Labrador and Alaska in another box, somewhere. National Geographic national parks maps somewhere in this house. I’m not very organized

Impressive pile of maps, Mike. I think there’s a song in there someplace. One Match Jerry? :)

Too many maps? I’m gonna have to struggle to get my mind around that concept.

Next week I am heading to a part of the bwca that I've never been too. Meeds lake entry.i go into the basement to start looking at maps to see if I have one for the area. I shouldn't since I haven't been there.

Poking through map after map, Shazam! I have the map. If I look long enough I think I have a map for the whole place.

You can never have too many maps.

Can never have too many maps. Seems to be a common theme on the board. I’ll get lost in “reading” maps just like reading a novel. I usually consult all the lake depth maps and USGS quads online before each trip in addition to the tripping maps. I also like the Voyageur maps.

There's a saying in the cycling community: you can never have too many bikes. As with maps, I agree. I'm sure the saying is common to many groups or hobbies.

As to my original post, it's ironic that I still have to get a map for where I'm going on Monday. I have one already (a Voyageur), but I like to always bring two, to compare and contrast. So I'm off to MM in Minneapolis to get map number 48!

I have no idea how many maps I have. A good guess would be 75. I kind of went to electronic maps now. I have a Garmin GPS, a Garmin InReach with a GPS, and a Garmin watch with a GPS screen in it. Now you have me wondering how many maps I own.
