There was no DNR announcement that I have found yet. I stumbled upon this by coincidence. I hope I am wrong, or it is just some internet snafu.

We have (had?) a reservation for a tent site at Judge CR Magney for June 7-10. Today, I thought I'd take a look at the reservation calendar to see whether the campground was filling up. (Magney hardly could be called busy early in the summer, but I was curious.) I was surprised to see the number of reservations, with almost every weekend near capacity and quite full during the week. I noted that during our stay, however, there were only 5-6 other sites occupied at the same time out of 27 sites.

I spent some time looking around at other spots closer to home, camper cabins, etc until around 12:30 or so, the site froze up on me. After I restarted and could get pages to load again, I couldn't get it to go back to any dates earlier than July 1st. When went back to the Magney calendar, it would default to July 1 and take some effort to get it to show otherwise. I finally forced it to go back to June 1st, and the calendar showed every site filled during the month of June... or at least 'unreservable.'

When I logged on to my account, my reservation is still 'Active.' No email regarding any cancellation, either. Weird.

Can anyone else test this out? Try making a state park camping reservation for sometime in June. Post your results. Something weird here.

Can confirm, it only works for July. Someone probably slipped in setting the availability date - give the vendor a call on Monday. (Note that this web site is outsourced, not run by the DNR, so your message may need to go back and forth between a few people and take a bit to get resolved.)

This morning, I got through to the reservation call center - 866-857-2757. A very helpful representative explained to me that my June reservation was still good, but that a decision was made to accept no further reservations for overnight stays in MN State Parks in June 2020. This was done in the interest of easing demand in the opening month and promote the likelihood of an ability to socially distance within the facilities.

She confirmed that this modification was made at noon yesterday. She admitted that the rollout was not without some confusion, even among the reservation staff, and that a lot of calls were being fielded with this very question, beginning yesterday afternoon.

She was open to my suggestion that a statement clarifying this change be prominently displayed on the reservation center website.

So the person I had talked to made it seem like they just were not allowing any reservations currently since they did not have a timeframe for opening back up the campgrounds. Though it would kind of make sense to not allow any new reservations. Well I was supposed to have a warm up trip up north in May but that's scratched, diving into the BWCA instead end of month.

So... does that mean cart-in, backpack-in, boat-in sites within MN state parks?

I say yes, but the word is soon. Not yet. I should clarify,it probably does not include like Tetachouche cabin sites etc in the back county.

Mn. DNR:
We are not mandating cancelations after May 31. Existing reservations after May 31 are currently being held. However, because we do not know when state campgrounds and lodging will reopen, we are currently not taking new reservations for the month of June. We will resume taking new reservations when we have a reopening schedule. If you cancel a reservation on or before May 31—no matter when the date of the reservation is—you will receive an electronic gift card with a refund. If customers prefer, they may modify their reservations to a future date. DNR will continue to waive modification fees until our campgrounds reopen.

A friend is wondering if the parks are open for day use to non-Minnesotans June 1? She read somewhere that if you’re from out of state you can’t even today use right now? Does anybody have any day-use news in June?

I’ve been going to the State Parks recently and there are many vehicles with out of state plates on them. I don’t believe they would begin a ban on out of state people on June 1.

The following are OPEN:
All state parks except Grand Portage State Park.
Bathrooms, vault toilets and shower buildings currently open will remain open.
Public water accesses, although the availability of amenities, such as docks, is contingent upon seasonal maintenance.

I think now the stay at home order is lifted there is no ban on where your from?

I think tomorrow we will be getting updates on what allowed June 1.

Thanks. I will let her know.

She’s also very concerned about her safety. She is a Packer fan. I told her I can’t promise her survival in Viking territory.

She should be safe unless she wears a Cheesehead or something.

May 20: Governor says Campgrounds and charter boat services would also be allowed to open under the latest orders with guidance from the state.

That is commercial campgrounds but it does give the green light for state and Federal to follow if they choose?

Pinetree it looks like the state has put out some guidelines they are doing to get the parks reopened. Most by the middle of June. I wonder when the federal campgrounds then will get going as well? Seems like they would be opening soon as there are far less people going to these locations.

My Federal Superior NF Campground Reservation For May 26th got cancelled last week but I rebooked for June 1st. It should be fine because there is lots of space between campsites and no common areas other than Latrines and they’re one person at a time. Shouldn’t be too hard for the managers to give the Latrines extra cleaning or at least say they did. On their recommendation I’m bringing my own toilet paper, hand sanitizer and reading material to the outhouse just to be safe.
State Parks where campsites are right next to each other and have many common areas like shower houses where many people can be in at once may be phased in later in June.

Going to be at Sawbill June 2 for 3 nights, so I hope you are correct.

The Sawbill website doesn't say anything about the campground being open yet. They mentioned possibly by June 1. They did comment in their 5/16 post that they will give info on dispersed camping sites in the area.

Recreation.gov has reservations re-opened for June at State Park campgrounds. We just booked a spot today for our trip up to the BWCA later this month.

Yes, we can see June dates on the reservation grid again today. Our reservation (made a year ago) at Judge CR Magney SP for June 7-10 will be cancelled, however, and a gift card issued in refund. (It hasn't happened yet; this is based on a conversation with the park office.) The campground will not open there until June 15th. All up and down the North Shore, state parks have varying campground opening dates, June 1, 8 or 15. Of course, it's slim pickings to find a replacement for our 3-day stay anywhere along the shore, with reservations open for a full year ahead. We wound up with June 9-12 at Jay Cooke SP. (Talk about a change in plans! A totally different set of Superior Hiking Trail sections to research this week!)

One interesting comment made by the administrator at CR Magney: some parks will be closing off selected sites within their campgrounds to ensure social distancing can be maintained. I can only imagine the headaches that will ensue as a result of cancellation of just a select number of site reservations for a particular date...

With that in mind, I made sure to call ahead before making my replacement reservation online, but the manager at Jay Cooke said that if it shows up as available online today, it's available...
