It's been quite a while since I was a regular on the forum. Getting married, having some kids, moving a few times, have all kept me from the BW for about 5 years. That ends this year! My wife and I will be going for seven days to EP 16 in about two weeks!

The reason for the post is that I have a couple of wonderful clients who are making their 1st trip to the BW this summer and I want to get them something special for their trip. I had a thought in mind of getting them custom canoe paddles, perhaps with their names inlaid or something like that.

Does anyone have suggestions on where to find something like this or what it might cost. There are "legal" regulations that limit the size of "gifts" I can give to clients so cost has to be under $200.

Any other cool ideas for something that fits this bill? I want it to be personal and also something they will have for a while. Doesn't necessarily have to be personalized with names but something "special".

Thanks!

-Matt

What a great idea... and very thoughtful. I'm sure whatever you get them will be appreciated.

Do you think they'll be doing more trips after this first trip? Might make a difference on the item you buy them.

Matt,

Here’s a pic of a paddle my buddy, GeoFisher, made for my daughter after a trip we did. It was a really cool gift!

Badger paddles offers customization. It looks like their website is undergoing updates so you might have to call for prices. Price should come in right around your $200 limit for a good paddle with a personal touch.

You could get a nice heirloom quality axe within that price range.

Vintage BWCA maps make great gifts for trip mates, guides, newbies. Take a look at some of the maps in my photo album and email if your interested in any. I have some of LLC, Agnes, Crooked, Oyster...

It is not that hard to make paddles. Find a carpenter friend to glue up some nice hardwoods. I like an ash stringer with mahogany.

Shaw and Tenney also offers customization. You could get nice Penobscot paddles with their first names engraved for just under your price target.

I like the paddle and the axe ideas. Could also be a hatchet or knife and have it engraved.
my two cents
