We currently have a Quetico trip planned for July 28 and need to develop a contingency plan if the border is still closed. The trip is for 5 older scouts and 2 leaders.

I have done more than 20 trips to Quetico and this year we were planning on a 9 day trip up the falls chain and back down Agnes. None of us has ever done a trip in BWCA.

I am looking for suggestions for a comperable route in BWCA. Remoteness is the primary objective.

Check out gymcoachdon’s thread on his plan B trip. Something like that should give you a good shot at hitting some remote areas, especially in the center of the park near Sagus, Boulder, Adams, etc. That area is likely to have more solitude than what I’ve experienced the two times I’ve been on the falls chain, but still less than most of Quetico of course.

Be aware that within about ten miles of entry points, you’ll want to make sure to have found camp by around 2 pm or so. The deeper you get into the BWCA the less important that is, but I’ve had a lot of trouble finding sites later in the afternoon a few times.

You can access this area from either the Ely side or the Gunflint side, your preference. With 9 days and the ability and desire to travel like you guys have planned for your Quetico trip, you can make it to pretty much anywhere you want.

My wife and I did this one last year on a 9 day trip. We cut it one day short, but it was fantastic. We're a little older, and didn't want to carry alot of weight, so we tripled portaged, and it was still doable. Some really pretty campsites on that route. Interesting topography, portages, mini-water falls, creeks, wildlife. Had just about everything, except moose. I don't think there are many moose in that part of the boundary waters. Loved the trip though. Special thanks to the video producers. it sold my wife on the trip.

I went on a Mudro, horse river, crooked, gun, boot, fairy, fourtown etc counterclockwise loop one year, and really enjoyed that too. But Mudro permits are hard to come by at this point.

BWCA is my plan B as I was planning on going into Quetico this week. Funny, I am doing a loop around Boulder and Adams, because I, too, appreciate the more remote locales. I've been to BWCA twice, then Quetico and Woodland Caribou. So naturally, I was looking for more remote locations in BWCA. Our father/daughter trips have gotten progressively longer over the years, and we are doing a 14 day loop with one, maybe two layover day. When you have 14 days, BWCA can seem kinda small ;)

Even though the total acreage of the BWCAW and the Q are fairly similar, the Q seems to have a much bigger interior in my opinion because the shape of the Q is a big rectangle, nearly a square, whereas the BWCA seems to have a big central segment and smaller eastern and western segments. Kinda seems to break it up a bit and make it seem smaller in a way, at least to me.
