My group is going without me this year. The group of six guys is 3 from Central Wisconsin, and one each from Kalamazoo, Mpls, and Denver. I'm not ready for the exposure.

Anyway, my question is about treating the group to a surprise just before they depart Grand Marais or as they get picked up on the return at Hook Island. Thinking of calling the Gunflint Tavern with my credit card number and picking up their bar tab. Or having the outfitter send a six pack with the tow boat driver picking them up on Hook Island.

What other ideas do people have or have done?

A cooler with cold beer was always much appreciated on the float plane for the trip out of the bush on Wabakimi Project trips especially after 2 weeks of nothing cold to drink.

Great idea, Bobber. Our group leaves Green Bay in the middle of the night and have traditionally stopped for breakfast at Perkins in Superior. One year that I couldn’t go, I did the same as you - I called the restaurant and paid for their meal. It was fun for me to do and a nice surprise for them.

Thats a great idea.

Are you concerned about the exposure to them, or the trip up?

very thoughtful idea! you could also give the outfitter a dollar amount that the party could use on souvenirs from the gift shop. or better yet, pay for the tow.

i'm not a fan of alcohol in a boat or vehicle being used for commercial purposes. if the outfitter sells beer then have the beer waiting for them upon their return.

Great idea about the six pack of beer for you buddies. One cold beer waiting for them in the tow boat or after they land at the outfitter would be awesome. I’m actually thinking of asking about this on our next trip.

Yes, both I guess, but more about the group exposure. For social distancing, I think a person takes it as far as they want and does what they want to do. In this case, exposure to each other is high IMO... tight quarters for the trip up, shared bunk room, handling each others packs, shared tents, etc. On the small chance one group member has been infected, it is almost guaranteed that all will become infected.

This is my first year in 22 without a "Spring Trip with The Guys", but I don't feel bad about it.

I totally understand.
Great gesture on your part!

That it very thoughtful of you. I'm sure they will appreciate the gesture.

Most outfitters already have a cooler full of beer and soda when they come to pick you up anyway. I'd check first to see if that's the case with your outfitter. If so, the beer will be perfect timing and the freebie dinner will be icing on the cake.

Nice idea. I'm not a practical joker (just a regular, impractical joker), but it occurred to me for some reason that this situation is ripe for a prank of some kind. Not sure if that fits with your group dynamic, but it's just a thought. Some fake news maybe, or a fake police thing (car got impounded by border patrol, etc.) spring to mind.

Then follow up the prank with a dinner.
