walleyes were still shallow in the evening over at Shagawa on the 3rd. 7-9' of water, windblown shoreline, next to islands, etc. They've got their feed bags on and and were super aggressive. Caught 4 perfect eaters in 90 minutes. Jigs with gulp leeches and worms were working for me.

Eyes on Stuart still shallow in 4-8' low light periods. Slip bobber with leech from shore provided enough action for my son and myself that having two rods in at the same time a challenge. Approximately landed 2 dozen eyes and lost about double that. This in 3 evenings of fishing. 14-16" size. Had a visitor to the fish basket the first night, we were able to keep him away.

Just got back from Caribou near Clearwater yesterday. We fished 6/8 and 6/9. Smallmouth action was insane. We could have caught over a hundred a day if we wanted on the eastern side of the lake along the south shoreline. The smallmouth were shallow, 4 to 8 feet, and the walleyes were just beyond that.

JacobsonOutdoors: "The fishing on Alpine this past week was fantastic. Lots of smallies caught. Bring plenty of soft plastics, hair jigs, and top water baits. Here’s a link to a video I put together of our trip. Enjoy!

Awesome fishing this weekend on Ensign. Caught everything on slip bobbers in 8-10 feet of water. Bass during the day and walleyes starting as soon as the sun hit the tree line at night. Bait was always leeches, and our rigs varied between plain hooks, colored hooks and jigs. The fish hit on all of the rigs.

I just got back from Red Rock and Alpine. Fishing seems to have been slowed by the cold front. There were frost warnings each of the nights.
On Alpine, we did well with leeches under slip bobbers at dusk. On Sunday, we even did well at 10am under full sun. But the wind was howling and the waves were probably blocking the light from really entering the water. The walleye were found in 6 to 10 foot of water.

Just back from a laker-focused trip on the gunflint trail, June 14-18. We caught trout every day on Clearwater and sag— not fast and furious and no monsters but nice fish. Made two nice meals for my son and I. We trolled the 20-30 foot part of the water column in various depths, from 25-100+ Feet. All our fish came in 30-45 range. Most of the fish we marked were on or near the bottom and willing to rise. Surface temps 59 early on Clearwater, 63 on sag. Blue and silver tailDancers with a red belly were the main game. Scatter rap TD in size 9 was our best bait but we also had success with the size 11 standard deep TD.
The only time we targeted walleye was in James bay and we didn’t catch em.
I have permits for the last two days of laker season in September. Can’t wait to get back up there.

Just wrapped up a fishing trip up the Gunflint Trail.
Typical trip, some great days and some slow days. Had a few days with less than 10 fish Per canoe and had one GREAT day with 155 fish (mainly smallmouth) caught and all released...yes...we were counting!
Mainly used jig and 4” plastic grubs in more natural colors.
Walleye mainly in evenings (after sun passes the tree tops) fishing jig and leeches in bays in 10-15 FOW. Caught one 20” walleye that was also released.
Good luck out there!

What style of "grubs"? Twist tails? Tubes?"
Used Yamamoto 4” grubs in Pumpkinseed with Black Flake, Watermelon, Black and just green/pumpkinseed.
Saw a lot of fish spit up crawdads, but also minnows.
I mainly stayed with a green & chartreuse 1/8 oz. jig head, but pink, white, black and just plain gray all worked just fine.

We went into Lynx (EP 14) on Sat June 13, (39 degrees) and came out on Fri June 19 (70 degrees). Very windy the first few days, hard to get much fishing done. We stayed back in the bay near the Heritage portage and caught some small mouth bass. Then the weather turned to 90 degrees and total sun, still caught some smallies on top water poppers. 3 nice ones, 2 were 3.5 pounds and a few more just under that weight. Caught a few very small walleyes but we were just doing lures, no leeches. Caught a nice 2 pound smallie on a lazy ike trolling.
Back in this bay are two "shelf's". Caught the 2 bigger fish just on the shady side of each with the top water lure. Father/son were coming out as we were going in and they talked about a Mayfly burst on Shell two days prior, shut everything down.
Good luck!!

Lake voyage in a canoe is always better when shared with others, either during or after the trip

We just got back from Gaskin. EP47 Lizz Lake. Entered June 21-25. It was very windy which made fishing early morning or very late in the evening. We had reports from others on the portages in that fishing was rough. Again, talk of a mayfly hatch. We managed 5 small feisty northern. (lures, not live bait).

Just back from a week long trip to SAKL. Walleye were in 20-30ft during the day & would move up in the late evening. This bite was tough. Smallmouth were concentrated on shallow rocks & windblown points. Lakers were very scattered. Caught some targeting them in 80ft of water & accidentally picked others up trolling in 25ft... Pike were everywhere. All together it was a tough bite. We were out 2-3 times a day for 6 days & maybe picked up 20-30 fish per person for the week. We did have some great fish sprinkled in though!

Just got back from a loop starting in Moose ending on Lake One. We did not do much targeted fishing but we did do some trolling while traveling.
I had luck trolling blue and silver hot and tot catching a couple of walleye in Fraser and Insula, also hit two lakers with a blue and silver Cabela's Walleye runner paddling across Kekekabic, had about 100ft of line out trying to go deep.
Other wise the smallies were hitting near shore on some hard baits and a natural 3" twister tail and a spinner.
Landed a nice pike as well on Insula with the silver and blue hot n tot.
Had at least 1 fish every night for dinner.
Good luck

We entered Baker (EP39) and fished Jack, South Temperance and western Brule from Wed-Sun of last week.
Fishing, in-general, was tough for the first few days. Hot weather with low winds. Hardly anyone was catching anything and despite glassy waters, didn't see any fish jumping all day. Couldn't even get northerns to bite.
We fished 6-8 hours a day, morning and evening and ate fish every night, but really had to work for them. Caught bass with totally empty stomachs. I'm not expert, but I think they were nesting and the ones we caught were defending their nests, rather than eating. Bass were in 4-8 ft of water over rocky areas. Time of day didn't seem to matter much.
Things opened up a bit Friday night with some rain. Started to see fish jumping and were able to catch a few more. Best lures were a green rattling rap (we dubbed this The Green Bastard) and Razor Shad Zulus (Thanks, Quentico Mike).
Saturday night, the fish jumped all night in the bay surrounding our campsite, so hopefully those in now have an easier time than we did.

We entered Mudro on 6/24 and base camped on Fourtown for three nights. We got the site on the southern shoreline on your way into Boot lake. Got to camp and was showing my brother-in-law how the Storm 360 search bait worked. Making figure 8's by the shoreline and an 18" smallie swam and smacked it 1 ft from shore. We caught a couple more and a few northern just setting up camp.
Picked up a half pound of leeches on the way in and that was the ticket for the trip. Didn't fish too hard during the day but it was slow. Morning and evening was awesome. Found a rock reef with a depthfinder and you could see the fish stacked up on the transition from 17'-11'. Threw out my anchor bag and bobbers and it was on. Had great luck three nights in a row. Nothing huge on the walleye front, biggest was 20 inches but a lot of action and "bobbers down". Caught my lifetime biggest smallmouth with my jig and twister tail hanging over the canoe while I was retying a bobber. It measured 21.5 inches and was a blast to bring in! I also noticed that action started around 7:30 with smallies and some walleye. At about 8:15 there was a 10-15 minute lull. After that it was on again until 9:15 and then it would shut off. Interesting to note since each lake has a "personality" with feeding times, but definitely could predict the bite and times to a T by the third night.
Wind was bad for a day and a half so day fishing really wasn't that intense or targeted. Mayfly hatch was happening and fish began to surface the last two nights but wanted nothing to do with my topwaters. Surface temp on Saturday on Fourtown was 75.6. I can't tell you how valuable a portable depthfinder is to find those reefs and rock humps, especially when the summer pattern sets in. I've been bringing one up for 20+ years and I can always say it pays off. You can do it without but it sure is worth hauling in and saves you from fishing unproductive water. Keeping it simple "TGO" style (with a bobber) made it a great fishing experience when all else wasn't working that well.
It was a great, short trip on a very busy lake/area!
