when you have a few hours, not days to kill

Due to C-19 I’ve spent a lot of time on hikes, thought I’d give some recommendations here and maybe get some of yours:

Barn Bluff – Red Wing –hike to nice views of Red Wing and Mississippi River, a short distance away you can drive up Memorial Park and walk around an even higher bluff for more city & river views

John Latsch State Park – north of Winona - probably THE most strenuous hike in MN, from the parking lot you will walk 425 feet of mostly stairs to THE most awesome view of Old Man River in MN, bonus, no fee for this state park really just a roadside wayside

Great River Bluffs State Park – between LaCrosse and Winona of I-90 – take any of the trails but the best IMO is the East overlook from the campground, the north and south overlooks from the picnic grounds are pretty decent too

Afton State Park – numerous trails, be sure to include the North and/or South River Trail in your hike, and also take your shoes off for a walk along the beach

Tettegouche State Park – on your way to BWCA – shame on you if you have never taken the hike to Shovel Point or to the top of Mt. Trudee, this last hike I came across some orchids on one of the overlooks, yes, they grow in high places too

Grand Portage State Park – see why they made a portage around the Pigeon

Caribou Falls Wayside – on 61 on way up to Grand Marais – one of many nice trails off of 61 that goes to a waterfall

Frontenac State Park - nice views of river and city

Ooh, thanks for this list! I've spent a lot of time at Afton and a good bit at Frontenac, and I've done Caribou Falls, but the others are new. Sounds like a list of future activities!
