TechnoScout: "I have the Granite Gear Superior One and the Quetico. Both have a pad on the pack for comfort. All well and good...have used them for six or seven trips.
The problem is that I have to ship these things from Texas when I trip. They take up a lot of space...just because of the pad. The pad does not flex in a way for good packing.
I am thinking about getting the GG Traditional #4 which does not have a pad.
Alternatively, I was wondering about modifying my Superior One--remove the pad.
Has anyone done that??"
I've done that on daypacks, intending to use the pocket formed with a water bladder/CamelBak. Slip the pad pocket about an inch or 2 from the top, pulled the pad, sealed the cut nylon with a flat tip soldering iron. Then I had a hydration bladder equipped pack, and a foam padded pack, depending on what I use it for.
