There are many threads with folks complaining about Leech tamers. Most of those complaints stems from losing leeches through the poor velcro at top...

I use a bait keeper to bring in the bulk of the leeches (1-2 lbs). I scoop out some every day and put them in a leech tamer for fishing. I have certainly lost my share of leeches due to crappy velcro.

Now for the tip... Don't leave your leech tamer in the water.

When in the canoe, I just dunk the tamer every once in a while and leave it folded in the bottom of the canoe. There is usually enough water there to keep them moist and the occasional dunking does the rest.

When at camp, just leave the leech tamer in one of the puddles in the rocks. Or leave is so that only the bottom of the tamer is in the water. Leave the top of the tamer out of the water.

This wont solve all the tamer issues but it should reduce the number of leeches lost due to bad velcro...

(And the other solution is to buy a new tamer after the velcro is really shot...)

I only keep a days fishing bait needs in them. The main supply stay in the Bait King. I’ve not had that much trouble with the Velcro as others. I lose them before they wear out.

Same here, although that is a good tip to not leave it in the water. Would also alleviate the annoyance of it getting wrapped around my anchor chord in the water! There is never any shortage of crap in my canoe lol.

Yah I hear you guys, good idea. Between the anchor rope, two stringers, two leech tamers, and a transducer bracket there is a lot of crap in the water to tangle up on.

Yes. The Velcro does wear out after a few seasons of heavy usage.. A Leech Tamer is $12. I'll keep my leeches submerged and healthy on my trips and then I'll just purchase a new Tamer every 4 years. No big deal.

I would highly recommend just using the cylinder shape leech locker. Easy to portage, easy to keep leeches in the bucket, and easy to keep water in while canoeing and portaging

I do use that. I use a Bait King. It does work great for portaging and at camp.

But it is a bit slow and cumbersome to remove the lid when fishing. If they are hitting well, I like to just grab one quickly from the leech tamer.
