I would like to bring my wife, who's never been to the BWCA and a friend of ours, who's done one trip, up to the BWCA. I was looking at a fairly easy trip. I generally like to go in early September, as there is usually less traffic and less bugs. I am wondering how busy that area is that time of year. Would like to paddle a ways in the 1st day and just do day trips. was looking at heading towards the North Kawishiwi area as opposed to Lake Two, Three etc, but not against doing that. My thoughts would be the river would be less traffic as opposed to the lakes that time of year. Also, has anyone camped and fished on Greenstone Lake, and day tripped up to Madden, would it be worth portaging all the way back there to see if the one campsite on the lake is available? Thanks everyone, and happy paddling!

Really hard to predict traffic that time of year but generally it starts to lighten up a little. You can probably get a feel for it by looking at the permit site.

The river route from Lake One landing is where I first took my wife (1971) and she’s been going with me ever since so I can recommend that route. You can’t find an easier place to start a trip.

River will certainly have less traffic than Lake One but it's all relative as there are fewer sites down the river too. Can't really go wrong and I wouldn't really plan a strategy around the business of either route. Go with your gut feeling and it'll work out. The paddle from Lake One landing down the Kawishiwi is as good as it gets for a first timer.

Oh I'm sure that one campsite on Greenstone will be available, that portage is ridiculous. It is literally straight up (picture below) and then difficult to follow once you hit the top. I think you would be better off at one of the campsites just east of the 210 rod portage. The one along the portage to Conchu is a gem.
