I go solo, and when I have booked my permit in the past and picked it up at a Ranger station, they would give me a partial credit because I was going solo. I also have a Golden Age pass, and if I recall, it was when I picked up my permit, I would also get a credit for having one of those passes.

This year being different due to the virus and just using the booking e-mail as your permit, does anyone have any experience how either or both of these situations is being handled or not handled? Thanks.

Tomster

Also a soloist and senior pass holder too and hold an email confirmation at Sawbill Lake entry this year.
You do have the option of having an outfitter handle the issuance of permits/processing for refund. For instance, Sawbill Outfitters has a walk-up window set up for permits and store supplies due to viral concerns. Likely, others do too.

This topic was brought up in an earlier thread this spring, but I don't remember anyone finding an answer... or at least not reporting back an answer to how to get the solo refund if you choose to use the email as your permit instead of picking up at an outfitter.

I booked a solo a few weeks ago and it only charges a single instead of the old double/refund system.

Can't help with the senior discount....yet.

My July trip to Brule solo was billed like:

Boundary Waters Interagency Senior Pass Use Fee $8.00
Boundary Waters Reservation Fee $6.00
Boundary Waters User Fee Deposit $24.00
Subtotal $38.00
Taxes $0.00
Total $38.00

My trip to Basswood with wife was billed:
Boundary Waters Interagency Senior Pass Use Fee x 2 $16.00
Boundary Waters Reservation Fee x 1 $6.00
Boundary Waters User Fee Deposit x 1 $16.00
Taxes $0.00
Total $38.00

It looks like solo or with wife it's $38.00
I don't mind, it's still a bargain.

The inquiry quark2222 brings up is at the heart a puzzlement for soloist. Why add the normal adult fee to a verifiable senior pass cardholder? (logic: data verifiable through computer processing.) It's retards progressiveness/ continuance of useless red tape--especially at a point when email account confirmations will suffice as a permit instead of the usual dedicated hard copy one issued by Ranger Stations/Outfitters. He will not see his discount honored unless he stops at an outfitter in person. It's only $8.00, on the other hand.

I booked my trip, and checked things with and without the Golden Age discount. Price is the same either way. I think I am just screwed this year, since I can't easily pick up the permit at a cooperator on the way up. Oh well. Not sure why the USFS can make some arrangements for people to pick up permits at a Ranger Station. Would not be that hard. They could check with a local grocery store for tips on how to do it with a few square feet of plexiglass and a mask requirement.

No, honestly, you aren't screwed. You get to go! Enjoy an extra nip of whiskey or something.
