First post here so forgive my ignorance of undestanding battery lingo, etc. We are heading up in September and just purchased a Striker Plus 4CV. I have read tons of posts here so somewhat grasp what I need, just need confirmation. I know the unit is a battery hog, but am still stuck as to what set up would be best. 6 days on the water, use will probably be 6 or so hours each day. I am leaning toward the 8 AA EUL battery set up.... but just because of what I’ve read here. Is that my best option? I could also do the rechargeable 10365 as option 2? I have a Goal Zero battery to charge from as well as their solar charger... could this be used to charge option 2 in some way? Sorry I’m really not tech savvy to this stuff. Also, I have read links here showing the set ups, etc with waterproof case, but have not seen how to cut and attach the power cable from the unit to the battery packs. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and a recent post mentioned finding EUL’s at 75-85 cents a piece online.... I cannot find them anywhere near that cheap when I did a search? Thank you!

I have the same unit and built a set up recently. I posted pictures on this site you should be able to find easily.

I am using EUL batteries. 8 will not work for that unit. It will power up the unit by itself but if you plug in the transponder you'll get several warning beeps and then shut off in just a few seconds.

I moved to a 10 AA EUL set up and it seems to work great. (I had to cancel my trip - should be out right now - but thankfully it looks like I'll be able to go in a few weeks. So I haven't used it "for real" yet.)

I have also been told that 2 8 EULs set ups run in parallel should work well too. The unit is a energy hog on start up apparently. I am going to be out for 9 days and plan to fish 3 to 5 hours on 8 of those day. I think I'm going to bring 3 sets of back up batteries.

My local Costco had 20 packs for $16.99 ($.85 per) for a while and then had them for $14.99 ($.75 per). Unfortunately they don't carry them any more. I'm glad I stocked up.

I don't have any help to offer on the recharging questions. One day I'll figure that out but the price on the 18650 batteries I looked into was not cheap. I figured I would need 2 sets of 4 - one to charge in daylight and one to use.

For getting your power line into a waterproof unit-that is pretty easy. One end of your line has 4 wires. 2 aren't needed unless you are connecting to another unit or data transfer (or something along those lines). The other 2 are your black and red power lines. On the red line is an inline fuse. The fuse plus the other 3 wires are wider than the other end with the plug (and cap) to connect to your display unit. So what I did is measure the diameter of the plug end and drilled a hole through my pelican case. I used a forstner bit so it was a really clean cut. I think a 7/16" bit could be used but I believe I used a 1/2" bit. It let me have a little more room around the cord for epoxy. Measure it to be sure. Then I used an small knife and scissors to cut into the rubber lining of the pelican case in alignment with the hole through the plastic. I pushed the plug end out through the hole from the inside of the case and just left the wires and inline fuse inside the case so it could be easily plugged into the battery pack.

To secure and waterproof the cord I used gorilla brand 2 part epoxy stick. Cut a piece off, mix it together and push in in the hole so it surrounds the cable. The rubber lining of the pelican case comes out so you can easily see the epoxy of either side of the hole. Just make sure it seals it all nice After it dried for a day I went around everything with a little marine goop just in case.

You do not need to cut your power wire at all.

if you need more pictures I can post them.

Thanks, I had read that one already but still had those questions above. I have read your posts/comments thoroughly and learned so much from your knowledge... thank you,

THANK YOU!!! These are what I was needing specifically... I think I saw your pics on another post, but would love to see how you plugged power cable actually in to the battery pack.... I figured I would have to cut and splice to the wires connected to battery holder. And where did you get your 10 AA holder, Amazon has one but with no wires... they do have a 5AA holder that I could just put back to back.... thank you!

I ordered the 10 AA battery holder from amazon for less than $4

10 AA holder

It has teminals like a 9V battery on the top. You can plug one of these into it.
battery clip connector

they might make some with wire leads only but I like being able to pop off the connector and turn things off without having to pull our all the batteries.

you then need to connect that battery clip connector to your red and black power line from your power cord. You can do this lots of different ways. I guess soldering them would be the best but I used butt connectors, heat shrink, and electrical tape. You can get that stuff at home depot, lowes, or any hardware store.
butt connectors

I also ordered some back up fuses just in case the one they include blows.

MagicPaddler, do you think I would be better going to 8 pack euls together or one 10 pack? Thank you.
