Good report, good photos. Hope you can make more family trips--we had a few before the kids left the nest, but our trips as a couple have been great, too, so give that some thought. It's a shame every "newbie" doesn't do your level (heck, half your level!) of homework. That's what made the trip go so smoothly.

Beautiful family photo and beautifully written. Definitely not in the "pointless or redundant" category! Enjoyed the read/storytelling.

Great trip report. I like you longed to explore further into the wilderness than my parents would venture. I was never invited to go with anyone so didn't make my first trip till I was 37 or so. Now I lead 3 trips a year and am so grateful I didn't let those thoughts of being to old and inexperienced stop me. I pray your family will be able to trip together again, but if not, the memories will be priceless.

Fun to read about your trip. Sounds like it was a great experience. I love Cherokee and Frost, and memories of different times on that route kept coming back to me.

Gordon Lake is also one of my favorites. We stayed on Gordon at the northern campsite for two nights on our 22-day trip back in 1992, another stop for a night in 2002, and then when we were on our trip in 2012 we stopped there for lunch. Never saw an otter there, but we did have some nice loon encounters on Gordon. One of my most vivid memories of the campsite on Gordon is that there were wild columbine blooming everywhere. I don't remember ever remarking about that when describing other campsites.

Your boys will never forget this trip, and any others that they experience. Thanks for sharing.

I really enjoyed your report and pictures. I'm glad the trip was everything you dreamed it would be. It brought back memories since I have been to those places, most multiple times. The first time I paddled Gordon I too was struck by it's beauty. It's not one of those lakes everyone mentions. Frost was a nice lake too, and I've been to Cherokee from Cross Bay to the north and Baker from the south.
I hope you have many more adventures to the BW and wherever your wanderlust leads.

Wow! Great trip report. This is the perfect commercial for the BWCA. How could you read this and not want to explore the BWCA? Well done. Go for three years in a row, have your son bring along a friend next year. If you want to change it up a bit head to Cherokee from the Baker EP or from Cross Bay Lake on the Gunflint. Long Island is a nice lake also.

You are a fantastic writer! I loved reading your report and it actually brought tears to my eyes. As a 50 something mom also facing having a high school senior this year, your final comments really hit home. The family trip we just completed may also be our last for awhile, though I hope not.

I encourage you to write up your first trip from 2019 as well. Trip reports from the perspective of different experience levels and the lessons learned are super valuable.

I hope you are to find a chance for more family trips, and keep stretching your adventuring legs. There is always something new to try out there. After decades of different experiences, I finally ventured out on my first solo this summer and it leant a whole new perspective.

Thank you again for writing such a beautiful trip report.

Excellent trip report!

Thank you for taking the time to share your story and photos. It was a well composed, entertaining, and informative report With regards to you feeling as if you don't have anything to add to this site. Hogwash! Might I suggest you follow your own advice and just be - YOU. The is no one right way to write up a trip report; or required informational disclosures or camping tips necessary. Variety is the spice of life. I wish more people had the courage to share their perspectives and adventures as you did. Well done.

Nice trip report thanks. You and I share a similar story, before our first Boundary Waters trip I spent a year reading every trip report and every thread I could get my hands on, I enjoyed planning the trip as much as I did the trip itself. Your kids will love you for it and I'm sure you will be back

Thanks for sharing this report and experience.

I think reports from less experience trippers are very helpful. Some of us come to paddling later in life and it is helpful to know what is possible.

Your report also plants a seed that I should visit Frost Lake someday.
