Looking at the maps for a 4-5 day BW trip. Brule came up as a possible place to go, but I'm wondering if the area has walleyes. Wondering about Winchell, Omega, etc., or maybe the Cherokee, Frost area. Looks like Gaskin may have some walleyes. Otherwise, looks like smallies, lake trout and pike. Maybe Vernon Lake.

Thoughts?

We were out of Poplar for a 4 day trip and managed to catch a couple of Walleyes on Horseshoe down from the Gaskin portage in just an hour or two of fishing. Smallies and Northern on Gaskin and Winchell. Heard Allen has good walleye fishing but we just travelled through.

I can only tell you what I have read in books and the forum.

This book says that Brule is a good walleye lake and also mentions Juno which is one portage away from Brule.

I have also read that South Temperance is good for walleye.

I have recently ordered some Voyageur Maps. I am finding the chart on each map that shows game species in each lake to be very quick and helpful. It is faster than looking up individual lakes on the MDNR site.

According to Voyageur, Gaskin does have above average size walleyes. Cherokee has no walleyes. When was a map ever wrong though?

Brule can be excellent for walleye and smallmouth. No lake trout. I've fished it many times and done quite well on 'eyes... but I've also fished it and been skunked. It is mainly about lucky timing. But you can increase your odds by fishing evening (an hour before and hour after sunset) and when there has been a west or northwest wind from the day. Fish 10-15 FOW. Slip bobber with leeches works well.

Few years ago, I bumped into Jackfish at a McDonald’s in Duluth. I was taking the family up to Brule. We have fished that lake several years (June) and have always had good luck with eyes. Big water=Big eyes. South Temperance is also a Great Lake to fish.

Going to Brule, no portage. Pack everything plus the kitchen sink.

Hey, that's right! You have a good memory, Me2012. I seem to remember a trailer full of canoes with BWCA.com decals on them. How's my memory?

Thanks for the feedback so far. I'm trying to figure out a late August trip for our walleye fishin' crew when we've normally gone to Quetico in June. So many options, but we're at the mercy of permit availability, too.

That put a smile on my face! Decals, hats and shirts. For awhile my wife called me a walking billboard for BWCA.com

A buddy and I went to Brule last August and did OK on walleyes. Main lake humps and slip bobbering a rock pile in the evenings. Also, don't forget South Temperence. Also some bonus fish in the area for thorough researchers. :)

Lundo... South Temperance sounds and looks interesting, and it's only a short portage from Brule.

South Temperence seems pretty easy based on the one morning I was there. Shad raps along shore lines turned a handful of walleyes up to 18".

I have had great success with walleyes in Brule. Some nearby lakes where I also have had success with walleyes are S. Cone, Winchell (near the point heading to the PUP Lake portage), S. Temperance (best luck there for me was south side next to campsite and small island, heading towards the portage (slip bobber with live bait, also jigging).

Troll with reef runners and raps around that large island due north of the portage in the evenings.

HnD... which portage and which lake?

If you put-in at EP41 boat ramp, you paddle north/northeast? to the island with campsite 942. In the evenings this can be a productive place to troll with raps, lindy rigs or whatever lure/bait of your choice for walleyes. I did well just trolling along with my daughter in the bow one evening. She caught more fish than I did ( she was 10 at the time :).

There's a sunken reef near this island -- check out the map on this site for Brule. You will see it. Good luck!

Jackfish, consider a Homer entry camping on Vern for a night or two, then maybe Juno. Then hit Brule for the last night or two. WE have had good luck for smallies and eyes on Vern the last few trips. This year I caught 6 18-19" eyes from shore at our campsite. Juno has a good reputation. Then there's Brule...
