Can anyone recommend any instructional media, fly tying.

There are many good books on fly tying. You can also obtain a lot of videos on YouTube. In the Orvis Learning Center are instructional videos on fly tying.

Where are you located? Maybe you can set up a short trip to someone in this group to give you some basic (and not so basic) instruction.

That is a good idea. There are a few local classes I am going to attend, they will get me a good start. I am located in Ashland WI.

I have attached a link (hopefully) to the "Flyfish Ohio" website that has some great tutorials on some Smallmouth patterns as well as a few other classics. The site developers haven't updated it with any new stuff in the past couple of years, but the site is still up and has a lot of great info. The guys who run the site are pretty well known in SW Ohio with the local fly fishing clubs etc.

Here are some of the patterns I would start with from their list that aren't too complicated, but will get you started with the basic fundamentals of tying.

-Black-nosed Dace- basic bucktail. pattern, when you first start, just use one or two colors of bucktail until you get it down......"Sparse" is the key when tying on material with this fly....

-Foxee red Clouser- a variation of the famous "Clouser" minnow

Shannon's Streamer- a quick, but effective tie

Puglisi Baitfish- "Sparse" is key again

- Murdich Minnow- primarily synthetic materials so it sheds water well which aids in casting. Also fairly durable for Pike....the bulky head moves a lot of water....

If I remember correctly, in your flybox thread, my flybox photos I posted, there are a couple of "Shannon Streamers" and "Murdich Minnows" amongst the flies.....

My favorite books have been 1. Game Changer by Blane Chocklett if you enjoy tying streamers this would be the book for you. Blane was able to design a fly that would have the function that a fluke does in the gear world. 2. The Feather Benders book. Barry Ord Clark is very informative in his instructions. You should check him out on youtube his videos are mesmerizing.
