The best way to take fish home from Alaska is:
1. Ice your fish, filet and have it professionally vacum packed by a local processor.
2. Package it in a cooler or insulated fish box.
3. Take it as a checked bag when you return to the lower 48.
4. The alternative is shipping Fedex which is much more expensive.
Ive been a captain and guide in Ak for over 20 years. Fyi the Kenai River is a great spot to fish, however it can get crowded and there are many other great rivers that offer more remote and wild fishing experiences in Alaska.

Any recommendations for shore fishing on the Kenai penninsula/river first week of September. Any tips in general? This will be my first foray into this kind of fishing. Was going to try and pack a two piece rod and maybe some spoons/spinners or something?

1. There are many hike in fishing locations on the Kenai Peninsula. Light tackle/fly rainbows and dolly varden.
2. Most salmon will be past but there should be silvers still on the Kenai River. Also the biggest Dollys and Rainbows on that river. Float the upper stretches!
3. Dress warm/dry and be bear aware!

Ok... I have to ask the dumb question... what is a red and what is a pink? I'm sure it's local-speak for different species of salmon, etc. Sure sounds like fun.
My wife and I have an Alaska trip on our short list. We'll see when this Covid thing allows us to do it.

Red = Sockeye = primarily plankton feeder, turn red in freshwater, great eating fish 3-10 lbs, usually caught by net or snagged in salt, "flossed" snagged in mouth in fresh water.
Pink = Humpy = most common salmon, grow large humped backs in fresh water, good halibut & lingcod bait, good eating fresh in saltwater but dont freeze well
King = chinook = spring= black mouth. Most sought after salmon, excellent eating, up to 100 lbs.
Silver = coho = excellent sport fish & good eating, up tp 20 lbs. Acrobatic fighter.
Chum = Keta= Dog Salmon - decent eating, best roe fish, least fat. viscious fighter especially in fresh water up to 20 lbs, used to feed dog teams.
