Hello, last week I asked for some advice about a day trip from Gunflint Lake to Magnetic Lake into Pine River and back. I now have a McKenzie map of this area and I see that the first portage is on the Canadian side above Little Rock Falls. I have never been to the BWCAW before and am a little worried about finding this portage, especially since I don’t want to get too close to the falls. For those of you that are familiar with this area, is there a landmark I should look for?

Of course by landmark I mean landform...directions for compass could also be helpful.

Thank you!

I think this is well used route so locating portages shouldn’t be too hard. Although it has been many years since I traveled in the area I had no problems.

There is a portage on the Canadian side of the first rapids. There is an area just big enough to pull in a pontoon boat, very rocky. Just get on this portage and the trail takes you to Little Rock falls. You can try running first rapids if you know what you’re doing, then jus hug the Canadian shore and you’ll find the flat slab of rock to the right of the waterfall.
The portage is short but there is some down hill so just know where the back end of your canoe is so it doesn’t hit the rock behind You and push you forward.

^^ Yes.

Additionally, stop by the outfitting building at Gunflint Lodge, buy some snacks or last minute supplies, and just ask Mandy or whoever is there for a little refresher if necessary. They are top notch in there and you can look straight across from their dock to Magnetic.

Take the portage,,,it's not hard to find, and if my memory is correct there's a border marker there, makes for a nice picture.
