Heading through Moose and into Basswood for my first time in the bwca with a motor (~100 canoe trips). Are there any submerged rocks as I head up Moose and then into Basswood I need to steer clear of? My dad’s boat so I’d hate to leave a lower unit behind. It seems like almost every lake I paddle through I always come across rocks that make me happy I wasn’t in a motor boat.

The big island on Moose right across from LaTourell's has a couple large rocks submerged 1-2 feet about 50 yards off its northern side that would take out a lower motor unit if run over - it's also a good fishing spot between those rocks and the shoreline

Look at the maps and satellite imagery for shallow spots as well and just take your time unless you know you’re running over deep water. Nothing anyone posts can be a substitute for extreme caution on an unfamiliar lake. Whenever I’m on new water I’m putting around with the motor partially tilted up until I figure out a safe route.
Have fun!

This is by no means a marking of all potential shallow spots/rocks, but this is the route we take to the portage from LaTourell's / boat launch. We've been going up there for 1 week in Sept w/boat for the past 22 years and only fish Basswood. Just go slow around the choke down points and you should be good. Trickiest part is the "S" curve from Moose to Newfound as described by others. Be sure to follow only the path I marked right there. Ask an outfitter or lodge for some additional help.

thank you very, very much. I went online today and reviewed some satellite imagery, so this will help a lot to confirm what I thought I was seeing from those images.
If you want to PM me with all your hot spots that would be awesome...wink, wink.

We took a tow from Latourell's headed toward Knife last year, first time ever on that EP and having a tow. The 4 of us passengers were a little uneasy at our drivers full speed S curve but in the back of my mind this kid has done this 250 times and probably wants to see what people will do when it looks like we're going to ram an island at full speed. :) There's a way through it...follow a tow boat or sit off to the side and watch them go through it...you'll see one headed in or out any 5 min of the day it seems.

I'm not sure how to PM on this site as I don't post/interact very much, but happy to share my experiences in fishing Basswood and a few spots. I just updated my profile so that my email can be viewed so just shoot me an email. Thanks

I can't see your email from your profile, but I went in and changed mine to make it visible...and can't see my own in my profile. So something must not be working there or maybe it takes some time for the profile to actually be updated.
Feel free to email me direct at scofaw@yahoo.com. Thanks.
