Anyone ever see a motor mount like this? My neighbor was cleaning out her garage and gave it to me. She had no idea how it is supposed to work. I assembled it the way I think it goes, but I'm not really sure.

I’m guessing something like this, likely with some hardware (missing) that was on the canoe it was installed on initially...

Sure, I bet you are right. Probably some eyebolts or similar attached to the gunwhales or thwarts. Seems like you would need a tiller extender, or sit sideways to reach. I dont have a small outboard, but if I ever get one I think I'll buy or make a clamp on side mount.

I think the side mount is much more common for the reason you mentioned....and the side mounts I’ve seen typically don’t require extra hardware to attach.

That is a motor mount for an inflatable boat, like the old Seyvalor(sp?). Here is a more modern one for a sea eagle boat:
