Heading up to the Gunflint trail for a week. Not much traffic going north but a whole lot heading south. The line of vehicles stretched to a few miles beging betty's pies, barely moving.

25th for us!

Mocha, did you get a sense of what the reason for the heavy south bound traffic was?

I'm assuming it was just the holiday traffic heading home.

Or maybe also cold temps. This weekend traditionally marks the end of summer, but there is a freeze warning out for Ely tonight. Welcome to fall.

Traffic was very slow heading South a few miles before Two Harbors on Saturday as well for no apparent reason.

It sucks. Wish non-Minnesotans would stay out of our state. Not sorry if I offend anyone, but our state has faced a peril of non-respecting, trash ridden pieces of garbage that don't care about anything but themselves... very evident in the documented destruction in our local natural world.

Plenty of those types in Minnesota as well, and plenty of respectful people from all over the planet enjoy the wilderness and practice LNT when here.

That’s the 2nd or 3rd comment I’ve seen telling people to stay outta the BWCA. This is just plain wrong.

That's ridiculously harsh.
Because I'm from another state means I don't respect anything but myself?
I guess you assume none of that damage was created by a bunch of college kids from Minnesota.
Damn, son.

+1 for KarlBAndersen1's comment. Also, I think some of the damage could have been done by a bunch of old geezers from Minnesota (which is group I am in). And no, I'm not guilty. Hardly have left my yard since March except for necessities.

You actually want out of staters like me. EVERY campsite I use in the BW is left better than I found it. You didn't offend me. It's just a ridiculous statement.

I'll second that! Be careful, you might just want to buy a house up there and stay :)

As others have said, pretty harsh. I guess the Minneapolis destruction was all from out of state people too huh? Pretty sure most of the people going to the BWCA are there because of the beauty and leave it that way. a few bad apples ruin it for others, that happens in ALL walks of life and ALL possible scenarios. All you can do is teach your kids and friends the right way to respect the land and be a good example. Good Day sir

If this is how Minnesotans feel about me, I will gladly stay out of your state and spend my money elsewhere. Besides, I'm tired of hauling out garbage left by others in the BWCA. Also, those non-resident MN fishing licenses are way too expensive. ;-)

Have a safe trip Sheryl. Hope the weather cooperates.

You and others are welcome up here anytime in my book.

Mocha, have a good time. I saw some of the traffic issues coming from Detroit Lakes to Duluth yesterday, glad I was going the other way..

I like that!

Mocha- have fun up north!

AndySG- Hi! Come on over. Heck, we're all outsiders to somebody. Even Mocha is now from somewhere else. Someone's probably asking her right now "where you from....the Twin Cities". In a tone that's not really a question, more of an accusation. ;)

While I can't agree with the sentiment, I certainly understand it, as I also live in an area with lots of public land access and lots of out-of-state visitors. But I also realize that in the past 30 years we've lost area manufacturing jobs, and those jobs have been (partially) replaced with recreation-related jobs. Yes, there's been lots of disrespectful use of public lands everywhere this year, but the responsible users will repair the trails and clean up the trash, and hopefully 2021 will see a return to sanity. You're welcome to visit my area of western NC for a change in scenery, and I hope I'm welcome in Canoe Country next year, because I'm already planning a visit!

Mocha, hope your trip is going well. I’m heading to Ely to meet up with magicpaddler if I can just get my work done, haha. I need a break too. I hope you take high and dry’s advice and find a place back up there to hang your hat. (Do you even wear a hat?) It’s just different not having you up there!!

Ben, I had to laugh when I googled Goodland, to see where you live. The first picture that comes up shows trees and a road, but no buildings.... I trust the internet didn't get the whole picture. Either that, or you are really off the grid!

Off grid is living without bacon... I’m not there!

Bacon is good. Take care. And maybe give Mr Google a picture of a building (optional).

09/11/2020 06:43PM
Actually, maybe just leave
google wondering. We need some of that.

09/12/2020 10:14AM
Hope you are having a good time, Mocha.

We left Rockwood Lodge’s little cabin 5 this morning. When I walked down to the lodge to check out, I saw a big black bear on the road. Kicking myself that I didn’t have the camera with me!!
