outsidethebox: "So, are you needing the lakers to come up to shallow waters? We do to-the 17th to the 21st :)"No , actually Walleyes are the main target. Will do a couple days for Lakers, but the rest of the trip will be targeting Walleyes. Have great luck “usually” when the water temps get into the mid to low 50’s..also excellent Crappie fishing in that temp zone.

Agree it seems if I can get low 50's I can have great Lake trout fishing in the fall. Use to go the last couple of days of the season than paddle out the day it closed.
Good luck. Love paddling with leaves turning.

Pinetree: "I’m planning on spending the last two days of the month on Thomas for Lakers , we’ll see how much energy I have by then. If not I’ll just stay on Snowbank.i know it’s not as good as Thomas, but really don’t care if I catch any or not. It’s just being there that counts.walllee: "outsidethebox: "So, are you needing the lakers to come up to shallow waters? We do to-the 17th to the 21st :)"No , actually Walleyes are the main target. 13 days for us, too. Where you headed? We're going to try the Cherry/Topaz/Hanson/Amoeber area as we havent been before and can always fall back on Knife if the fishing is tough. I was out in Q last week of september last year and water temps were still in the high 50s low 60s so they were still deep. I am really hoping water temps will be low 50s in two weeks, but not holding my breath with the warmer temps on the horizon.

We are doing a quick and easy weekend stay at Clearwater and renting a boat. 3 generations of gilded gophers, although my pop is a badgers fan so I'm not sure he counts ;) If the fishing is slow we will at least have the fall colors on our side.

Usually in the fall, water temps fall pretty fast from the 70's. Than with air temps and water temps for a long way down will be the same, so they stabalize(sp), unless you get real extreme weather. They could stay in the mid 50's for quite awhile.
Lot of lakes right now the temp is the same probably 40 feet down.

thegildedgopher: "Any more recent updates on the GFT? Leaving Friday am and looking for lake trout. Thanks!"
Well Kawishiwi river is 61 degrees F. today and Ely Temp is 73 degrees F.. Its going the wrong way to get lake trout to move shallower.

I looked at the forecast and at least we’ll be comfortable on the boat and not freeze. We’ll be prepared to chase them deep if necessary, but when I planned a trip for the last weekend in laker season I was definitely thinking we might have a chance to catch them closer to shore. Every year is different!
Thanks for the info Pinetree.

Agree, went up in the fall for like 10 years straight seeking ;lake trout, the last days of September. Been hot in the 80's to snow squalls and highs about 32 degrees daytime, 20's at night with water temp around 45 degrees F.
Good luck, one thing just paddling and the awesome leaf color is worth it in its own.
