Saw this cartoon this morning and wondered how many of us have said this tongue-in-cheek as we're sitting by the lake, at an overlook, in camp, sitting around the campfire, out in the canoe. The BWCA, Quetico, WCPP and Wabikimi are some of the most beautiful places on earth. We're very fortunate to get to go where we go and I'll definitely take any of those places over the TV any day, especially now.

I know my son, Kyle, isn't thinking about any TV show as he looks out over our lake in Quetico.

Not so much TV shows for me, but those Loons can really ruin my wilderness experience with all their racket :-)

Not much TV in our house either. Our TV has not been on in the living room since probably February. I wonder if it still works??

With work and projects around the house, no time for it. Maybe this winter I'll start watching it again.

I usually just wish I could just stay longer when I’m in the BW.

There are many, many more important things in life than TV, social media, etc.

When I'm sitting watching a beautiful sunset like that I do try to stay focused, but sometimes I start think about pancakes.

Not surprised a bit, since a setting sun looks like a buttered and mapled pancake slipping away from you.

I like how it comes back up in the morning all warmed up!

After a ridiculously busy summer keeping up with our kids and their hobbies I was looking forward to sitting on an overlook to just take a breather for a few minutes. We hiked the trail from the Loon Lake landing to the overlook on the BRT that looks over Gunflint Lake last weekend. It was just what I needed even if it only removed me from the reality of life for an hour.

There are a series of hilarious canoe camping Calvin & Hobbes strips that are clearly based on experience. Definitely worth looking for.
I don't miss TV per se when I camp, but I do wonder how the Twins are doing as I lay down at night. Force of long summertime habit.

Lundojam, you inspired me. I just googled C&H canoe camp cartoons and came up with a bunch of great ones:

This is my favorite Calvin and Hobbs comic strip. I put it on my syllabus each year for the classes I teach. Just a reminder that simple things in life carry a ton of meaning and more important than material things. I know after one week of teaching I would sure love to sit on a rock and overlook a Northern MInnesota Lake.

Yup. We just returned from a week in a little cabin on Poplar Lake (Rockwood). Nothing like it.

Now the hard part: to somehow get them to sit in the center.... Beautiful K9!

There was a whole series in Calvin and Hobbes that deals with a family vacation in what certainly appears to be the BWCA. It was so insightful that I used it as a tutorial a few times when bringing rookies up here.
