Report from Maggie at Kawishiwi Ranger station a couple days ago.

Since spring we haven't had any reports, but this is the time of year the bear's internal clock reminds them they need to bulk up for the winter, so just be a bit more careful.

*************************
Heads up on a Bear Report we took today for Parent Lake- Western most camp site to the North- The bear took a food pack last night- still lingering around this morning – the bear did not “scare off” by load noises ( banging pots and pans) Please let us know if you get any reports on Bear activity- and please pass on this information to your guests if they are headed to that area.

Saw bear sign all over grand portage area. And as I went up the Arrowhead Trail Thursday night to disperse camp had the biggest black bear I’ve see in a while bolt in front of me. As we were getting ready to greet paddlers coming to the end of the big portage we saw a little guy on the road. And again as my pup and I headed up the trail saw him face to face... just a little guy for sure. But he didn’t scare off like ones I’ve been seeing this year. Looking for opportunity! Kira wanted to play with the big dog!

On Sunday had a group come back from Ensign and had a bear that wasn't scared off very easily. They were camped on the east side not far from the portage into Ashigan.

Time to start bringing barrels for food and being more careful around camp. The small critters will be doing the same thing to stock up for winter.

I was up fishing for the day Thursday and saw the FS guys heading out with a warden in tow as we were putting the boat on the trailer. Said they were going to post bear signage. Nice change of pace from portage maintenance and shitter digging I'm sure hahaha.
