I had spotty reception on my weather radio on Clearwater a couple weeks ago. I have been all over the BW/Q and always found reception. Anyone else have problems with reception the week of 9/21/20 or on Clearwater?

I had no weather reception on Alder this year...but I had forgotten to bring an antenna, so there is that.

I was on Clearwater two weeks ago also, on route to Little Caribou (in the Bell Magic I bought from you last year). I also could not get anything on my weather radio.

This may be relevant information. NWR calculated transmitter range

Clearwater is right on the edge, and this isn't a real-world measured range but a calculated one, so there must be factors it doesn't/can't account for.

I’ve had spotty service in a few spots too. I now have a InReach unit. I can get weather reports no problem with this.

I have an In-Reach as well but I couldn't find details on their web site about particulars of their forecasts. Is it hourly? Daily? How are the wind details?

I have the InReach Explorer plus unit. Each weather forecast is good for 2 1/2 days. The first day is every 2 hours information, then after that it goes to every 6 hours segments. Each forecast is just like one text message on your plan. The basic weather forecast is temperature, wind direction and speed, wind gusts, barometric pressure, cloud cover, chance of rain or snow percent, wind chill, cloud coverage, humidity. There is also a marine forecast that you can get if you need that weather forecast. The weather is from Dark Sky. I really like this feature to plan travel days.

You asked about the wind details...whatever way you will be paddling you will have a head wind. Haha

Clearwater should have better signal from KXI-43 (Bogus Lake Tower) - link
my .02 is it was out of service (common) for maintenance etc. for a short time period.

Interesting. I had a lot of trouble on Ima a few years back, and it looks like there is a little hole in both reception patterns from Ely or Gunflint for Ima!

I was on Clearwater this summer the first week of August and had very weak weather radio reception. If I walked around camp with the antenna fully extended, I could find a spot where I could just barely understand the forecast. Was on the fifth site counting W->E. I haven’t had any weather radio very long, so didn’t have the context for how rare this is to have poor reception. I was also speculating that the cliffs may have been interfering since Clearwater is basically a canyon with the bottom full of water.
