He is a white Jack -Rat Terrier with a black spot on his back. Face is quite grey with age. Let us know if you hear or find anything. We can be reached at 612-845-3122. "

One of our pups spent a good amount of time in the wild before we adopted her. We have photos of what she looked like when they first found her and it was excruciating to see. Whenever I hear of a missing dog I have to pull myself together a bit.

Tough going up there right now. Boomer picked a bad time to get lost. Until those lakes freeze solid and folks can get out on skis, it is going to be really tough to look for him. Nice of you to try BeaV

Nature is cruel. It is always so hard to lose a loved one no matter if it is a person or a pet.

Many years ago we were paddling the Nina Moose river just after ice out. While paddling I saw a large brownish hump in the water. It was not a rock or a log. As we got closer we saw that it was the carcass of a dead moose. And then we saw another one.
Two dead moose in the river. We thought about the tragedy that must have happened over the winter. Two moose trying to cross the river and fall in and drown.
It was very sad and hard to imagine.

Death in the woods is never pleasant. But we all must go. I’m not sure why I’m writing this. Maybe I have come to accept death even when it comes in the hardest ways.

I hope the dog is found alive. If not, I’ll say a prayer for it. I feel loss for the dog and the owner. I feel gratitude for Beav.

The effort BeaV exerted to make all those tracks to find Boomer is remarkable. This picture is only a glimpse of his weekend search.

Just felt like I should help the family is all. And I have experience in a few things useful under last weekend's conditions, I am a better woodsman than a canoeman and hoped I could be useful.

Amy from The Retrievers and Jaywalker, from this site, deserve much praise for their efforts. They gave me a crash course on Boomer's disappearance and how to capture him if I was fortunate enough to encounter him (I didn't know that a dog goes into "survival mode" and gaining it's trust may be difficult). Thanks you guys!

I was a little frustrated when my plan to cover lots of water by doing loops to surrounding lakes was not possible because of ice. West Round, Contest, Copper, Cross Bay, and the east side of Snipe Lake itself were frozen hard. Snipe was a dead end so I concentrated my efforts there and had time to lay scent trails back towards Tuscarora Lodge. As the 4th and 5th videos show, the lakes were freezing up fast , and those already froze were making ice fast. By now I expect travel for Boomer will be easy and if he should return to that area, hopefully the scent trails will work.

While waiting at the eastern campsite where Boomer disappeared, the sun came out and I took a picture. You can see that line in the picture- that's a ray of hope.

Very impressive, and it looks like Beav really searched all he could, hitting campsites all over Snipe and crossing the portage to Copper. I wonder if Cross Bay would even have been possible, as it is shallower in the north part and that bay at the end of the portage would probably have been iced in. Looks like maybe the Kruger boat was used? I understand the layup on those is super tough. Like others have said, your heart goes out for that dog...

That campsite is only about a 5 mile walk to Tuscarora. It would be nice if Boomer headed that way. My heart is just broken for Boomer and the owners. I don't know if I could get through an ordeal like this very well.

I agree with you. I can understand feeling sorry for some one who lost their dog, but there is nothing wrong with reminding them they messed up and reminding others how to avoid this situation. No it’s not shaming them as some suggest, it’s not harassing them, nor is it mean spirited. We all need those reminders once in a while. Seems like there have been many more dogs than usual lost this year, and not having control of the dog seemed to be the reason. I have made over 40 trips to the BWCA and have run into many parties with dogs. More often than not the dog is running all over well away from their owner, often jumping on other people, in their canoe as they load/unload, or getting in their way on the portage. I had a close relative who trained dogs, including a national champion, and is in the national retrievers HOF. He would shake his head when he’d see dogs running around like that and would say that not having control of your dog is bound to cause problems for some one. I admire those who have well trained dogs or keep them on a leash on the portages.

It’s too bad this dog is lost and hopefully it’s found. But let’s not be so Polly-annaish that we can’t accept a reminder of the responsibility these owners need to take when bringing their dogs into the wilderness.

Your wish is granted. There are always lost dogs and every five days, there is a weekend. I can already picture you, plowing through ice and stomping through snow, as mighty as BeaV and as tough as Kendra.

My wife is in the medical field and it's her job to do this minus of course your financial part. Maybe if people around her patients did this more she would have more healthy patients. Adults should be able to handle a bit of criticism from people that care about them. We used to think more with our heads and less with our emotions. Look at the direction we are heading.

I am giving the cliff note version of my morning.

This morning I saw two stray dogs in my neighborhood. The small dog had a collar with a tag. Called the number and the line had been disconnected. The second dog (a husky) had no collar. He had just crossed a very busy road and had almost gotten hit by a car.

I pulled off to a side street to see if I could help. I got the small dog. The Husky had gone into a ditch/culvert. He poked his head up and we locked eyes I called for him in a high pitched happy voice and he came to me.

With both dogs in my car. I went to a local rescue and they checked FB. We found the owners.

With the address programed into my phone I drove to the owners house. I dressed down the owner of the dogs and told they how I almost witnessed his Husky get hit by a car. Didn't even phase the owner. I told him that if he couldn't properly take care of his dogs that he should relinquish them to a rescue.

Yes sometimes accidents happen dogs get away get lost. Sometimes they are found sometimes not. As an owner of an animal you are directly responsible for the animals well-being.

Most towns/cities have laws that require animals to be on a leash and to have a collar with a I.D. tag and Rabies tag. Some of the more aggressive animals must be registered with the town where they live.

I volunteer for a breed specific dog rescue and I can tell you for a fact that there are many many people that should be arrested for animal abuse. If they treated a human the way they treat their dog they would be imprisoned for a very long time.

I hope Boomer gets found. Every lost dog deserves a chance to be found.

I'll need your latest lab results, a record of all you eat and how much you exercise, a list of your meds, the numbers in your financial portfolio, how much you drink, if you smoke, then how much, your height and weight and BP and heart rate, your daily spending habits, and so on. When I met Janelle face to face the morning before I went up, and saw her choke up in sadness, it never occurred to me to tell her that they should have had THEIR dog on a leash while in camp.

Then when I met Stephen afterwards for a 2-hour supper get together, where we shook hands and he was most appreciative of my efforts, it never occurred to me to tell him of their mistake.

It never occurred to me then or now, to tell them how little they know about a dog they owned for FOURTEEN YEARS. Silly me!

I did tell them, though, that their clothing was out of fashion, how much I disliked the make and model of car they drove, and told them how much I know about everything! No I didn't, just fooling ya.

I type the above with humor intended but with a reminder to respect each other.

I came to this thread assuming I would get an update on the status of the search for Boomer. Wow! Didn't find any information on the search in any of the recent posts here. It was fully 14 posts ago since I found information from Beav about his search efforts.

As far as I see, the posts since then are simply hijacking the thread to "discuss" the appropriateness of having a dog off leash in the BWCA or general philosophy of chastizing someone (?the dog's owners) about how they screwed up. These are definitely off-topic to this thread. I think if the posters want to provide their perspectives on these and other issues, they should start their own, separate thread on the topic and not highjack this post. I wonder why a moderator hasn't stepped in to make such a suggestion or at least keep the posts in this thread to the topic of the missing pup Boomer>

My lab is 13 years old. Great duck hunting dog on hand signals. Now he is blind. I watch out for him everytime he has to go outside. Just saying.

A ton of respect and a pound of humor, for sure.

In AA and Al-Anon, group members learn about keeping their side of the street clean.

What this means to me is that it’s not my job to try and change your behaviors. Nor is it appropriate to try. We all have our demons and/or issues in life, they are all the same but come out different. Alcoholism, eating dis-orders, drug addiction, anger. Most of us have at least one of these. This is the very short list of a longer list.

What this means is in line with Mismolly.

It's my hope that Boomer is in somebody's home right now and has been for awhile, warm and safe and loved, and the people who brought Boomer into their home simply don't know about Janelle and Stephen.

Tumblehome, you also agree with Jesus, who said that "let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

For those thinking now is the time to criticize the owners for not leashing their dog you need to understand there is a time and place for everything.

Out of love and concern for a friend or family member you may suggest that they should watch what they eat, stop smoking, or watch their fiances. However, it would be rather cold hearted to do some immediately after they have a heart attack, are diagnosed with lung cancer, or just suffered a large financial loss.

Same is true here. Anyone can sit back in the comforts of home and pick apart all of the "should have dones" in this situations but throwing them all out toward the dog owners right after losing their dog serves no other purpose beyond piling on someone that is already hurting. When in doubt, choose the path of kindness and keep your mouth shut.
