So, the ridge pole on my Timberline 4 really annoys me. Here's why.

The pole is like 1-1/2" to 2" longer than the other poles. When everything is packed up (I fold and roll the tent in 1/4's, width wise) the poles stick out the rolled tent just a little too much for my liking, which has, in the past, poked holes in my plastic bag liner, and/or, stuck out the top of my #4 pack too much and gets snagged on things.

This annoys me so much, I am thinking about making it a 2 piece pole. I figure I can buy another ridge pole and cut it down a bit and instead of having one ridge pole I will have 2 poles, which will pack a little nicer.

I am thinking it shouldn't affect the strength of the poles as a whole.

What say y'all? Anyone done something like this? Or am I the only one annoyed by it enough to consider it?

Thanks

John

Sounds like a good idea. Maybe fit the two pieces with a shock cord so you do not have extra pieces to keep track of. The end ridge poles on the Timberlines I've had were always just a little too long. Seemed like you really had to stretch the rainfly to get it to hook into the ends of the ridgepole. Making them a 2 piece would be a good time to adjust the length if needed.

That sounds like a good idea. It may be tough to connect the two with shock cord. When I have re-rigged my tent poles I can’t avoid having a small knot on the end that would receive the hook.

Crooked, I have an odd assortment of residual Timberlines aluminum poles. We use them to set a large hook over limbs for food packs. Happy to send you a male and female pair. All you would have to do is cut them to your needed length.

MB, I appreciate that, I make take you up on that if I need it.
I found a piece of steel tube that I am going to use as a coupler...so I will cut the center section of the ridge pole in 2 and fit the coupling in...I also was able to get Eureka to send me replacement cord and rivets to re-cord it. Will let you know how it turns out.
