I'm looking at doing a loop through lizz and heading south through caribou and vista lakes. I see a river down off Little Trout Lake. It goes south through a small lake named slough, and then down to Iota. Is anyone familiar with this? Do you know if it will be paddlable in late July?

Not a river,or even creek big enough to have name. I doubt that it would be navigable at any season.

If you wish to do loop including some of your lakes of interest consider starting at Ram and exiting at Bower Trout. It's a short walk down the road to fetch your vehicle. You can go to Brule for your turnaround or even further to Long Island Lake if you have a longer trip in mind.

It's actually a very nice loop. There are a few rugged portages that take careful execution to do safely.

Watch that portage over the Misquah Hills. It’s one of the toughest in the BWCA.

slippery, don't know what your goals for the trip are but I think you would be better served by heading south to Gaskin, over to Henson and up through Pillsbery, Swallow to Meeds. A trip to Vista on the way down would be well worth it if you can get the 5 star campsite on the south end. Okay site on the west side too but tough landing. It is one of my favorite lakes and offers great fishing and beautiful "vistas".

Meeds is a fairly quite lake with very good fishing too. Gaskin is nice, can get windy but decent fishing and good campsites. Horseshoe Lake is worth a night's stay too. One of the more legendary and unique lakes in the BWCA with decent fishing in it's own right and known, perhaps more than any other lake in the BWCA, for moose sightings. It's a great area, enjoy.
