Anyone have a report on Ely area lakes?

Im hoping to go in 2 weeks, which would be my earliest trip attempt. From the DNR info it seems possible some years and stupid others, so wondering what kind of year it is so far.

Appreciate it, dhfish

Burntside is still, for the most part, open. I've been skiing on small local lakes. Not a lot of ice but enough to keep me on top. Not a lot of snow in the woods, near perfect snow conditions on lakes for skiing.

The forecast looks promising for lakes that are already locked up. If you are sticking to the medium/smaller lakes you should have no problem. I am going in a couple weeks as well.

I was hoping to go in on Isabella. Not exactly a smaller lake, but pretty shallow.

Called an Ely shop and they said 4-7in on most lakes. Anyone know if there is any snow on the ground?

Just got back from an overnight on the Angleworm trail. Snow is two inches to bare ground depending on exposure. I would not recommend a sled or skis unless you don't mind running them over many rocks. I choose backpack, boots, micropspikes which worked well. I ventured off the main route to Gun Lake. Ice overall was solid. Little to no slush which was a big change from last weekend when the slush was abundant. The narrows on Gun had some thin ice and even a little open water near the eastern point of the narrows. My south facing campsite was largely snow free.

County plow doesn't go very far up the Tomahawk once you get east of 1. Only way its done is privately by a land owner or logging outfit for access.

That's mostly why we went.... Most years you can't drive to the EP.
