Hi Folks,

I want to get some advice from the pros.
My daughter and I have started winter camping. I've worked hard to keep it fun and keep it comfortable. It's simply wonderful.

When it comes to sleep she's warm. The only thing she brought up was that she has a cold nose. It's not a complaint, but more of a "it would be nice if..."
I'm not attempting to raise the next Jeremiah Johnson, I'm just trying to make some memories with my 11 yr old before those days are gone and from what I'm told, the time flies. If she's having fun and if she's comfortable, it's more likely she'll want to spend time outside with me.

So...I have some ideas about face masks...since we're all wearing masks now...would something like this work in our hot tent when we head to bed for her or would it just get cold, wet, & frozen?

We're Minnesota campers & residents so we know and understand the cold.

If that's not a good idea, what do the pros recommend?
Thank you.

I feel the need to say I am a heathen and sleep with a blanket or shirt over my face, disgusting the others who cannot do it. On a side note if the tent fills up with smoke and your buddy wakes up choking and coughing, you can just sleep through it...

I sleep with a knitted ski mask, which I pull on if my face/nose gets cold. If I get too hot, I pull it off.

I do a few different things depending on just how cold it is and the duration of the trip. Sometimes I just wriggle down into my sleeping bag, moisture be damned. Sometimes I use one of the down hoods (Nunatak I think is the company I went with, but there are several). Sometimes I take a long scrap of lightweight fleece fabric and just wrap it loosely around my head a few times like a mummy, which certainly feels a bit weird at first, but does work. As for actual face masks, the only one I've found to be comfortable for me for use during the day is the Seirus "Neofleece" stuff, but I still don't generally wear that for sleep.

A lot will depend on the overnight temperatures and the breath ability of the fabric. All fleece types are somewhat different. Avoid wind blocker type as these hold moisture very well. So I would ditch the example you show and go with a fleece only type or wool if she can tolerate it.

The colder it is overnight the harder it is for it to breathe and not freeze on the outside. I would try just fleece.

You could try a fleece bandanna over just her nose. Or a headband if it’s not too tight!
