I like to kneel as often as i can when i am in the canoe for a long day. it is much more comfortable for my back.

i have three canoes currently - one is a wenonah kevlar and royalex, also have a grumman aluminum. the aluminum is easiest to kneel in for me as the bench is higher and supports some of my weight so its not entirely on my knees. each has its pros and cons. however i cant seem to kneel as well in the kevlar but love the ease of portaging.

my question is are there other lightweight makes/models that are easier to kneel in that wenonahs?
thanks

There's many, but Northstar is the one I've had experience with. They're actually lighter than Wenonah's in the same layup. You can raise and lower seat heights if needed

Hi Egrabi,

Brian here from Wenonah.

Wanted to make sure you know that you can order any of our solo canoes with a bench seat mounted at whatever height you prefer.

And models like the Wilderness and Argosy come standard with an adjustable seat that lets you move the seat higher for kneeling or lower for sitting.

Also, if you're comfortable with DIY projects you can order the parts you need to convert a pedestal seat to a bench seat in our solos.

If you have any questions at all just give us a call. We're happy to help.

You might try using different seat pads before changing canoes altogether. I have a bunch of different seat pads that help me fine tune my seating position to help keep my bad knee happy when kneeling. You could try one of the pads that hunters use to sit on or an inflatable pad like the Thermarest lumbar pad or inflatable Wenonah seat pad or even try sitting on a flotation cushion. You can even just bring a small synthetic blanket and try folding it to various thicknesses to see if that helps.

ive been very happy wi the canoes. i love the royalex for floating rivers and the kevlar for long portages. i will try raising the seat to see if that helps. my ankles bug me more than my knees when kneeling and with a higher seat in the aluminum i have more freedom of movement. thanks for the tip

Haha I was thinking the same thing. I work for a Deere dealer and at times see things said on a farming forum and debate if it's best to speak up or let it settle itself. Thanks for being here!

I've found most commercial seats too low for comfortable kneeling . I think they do it for stability. I have raised most of my seats to near the 10" mark off the floor for ideal kneeling and seating. Gives you a lot more power in the stroke also.
By the way, adding a small soft roll beneath your feet to ankle area when you kneel really helps the ankle pain. And tilting the seat slightly forward helps too.
